Postby nielsdolieslager; Tue Apr 15, 2014 1:54 am DAW for Mac Power PC?

I did a clean Leopard install on my indestructible iBook and plan to keep it at another address with Sibelius 6, K3/GR3/FM8/Massive/Kore 2 and a DAW so I can do a little work there without having to carry around laptops on airplanes.

I wanted to install Tracktion 2 because it's faster then Logic 7 and doesn't need a USB dongle and it turns out I can't authorize it anymore. Mackie removed the authorization system because they sold Tracktion to Tracktion. Tracktion won't help me.

I found Reaper still develops for Power PC. What alternatives besides Reaper and going back to Logic 7 do I have?

I ran Studio One v1 on a G5 Power Mac for awhile. Renoise 2.7 will run on 10.4+ and PPC or Intel. But it's currently past that so I don't know if they'll give you an older version. and it's a tracker, of course.

It's going to be tough finding PPC anything these days, and I hope you don't plan on running third-party plugins.

As far as modern DAWs, REAPER is probably it.
Meh.

Don't let you discourage by folks who run new OS. 8)
I recommend you to update to Leopard 10.5.8 so you also can use Intel Plug-Ins and some of the older/newer DAWs. But I don't know if it's possible to do it on your machine.

No, upgrading to Leopard will not let him run Intel plugins on a PowerPC machine.
To laymen, software development is something akin to wizardry. Neither time, nor effort are involved. If software is missing features they want, or has bugs, it is solely because someone has been too lazy to wave their magic wand.

Thanks :)
Studio 1 and Renoise 3 are now intel only. Can't download a demo of Renoise 2.7 and don't understand that program, seems like Reaper is the way to go. Very interested in the networking capabilities. Is it possible to connect FX on windows to Reaper in OSX? I learned the hard way that Vienna Ensemble Pro can't be loaded as effect.

It's true that software written for intel won't work on ppc even in 10.5.8. Back then most software was written in universal binary though. First thing that wouldn't work was the google voice chat plugin, can't make phonecalls using google with my ibook.

Got a G5 for free with the 20inch cinema display I bought. Amazing machine, Tiger is faster on it then Mountain Lion on my iMac :) Can use software again I haven't used for years, like editors and librarians for my TX802 and Fantom modules.

If you mean the networking capabilities of REAPER, REAmote, good luck. Never worked once master to slave over LAN in Snow Leopard, try to connect and instant crash. I managed to set up plugins on the slave but it was a complete waste of time. I don't know if it was even built before 10.6. Maybe it will work for you. It isn't much of anything. I didn't care, I was curious after someone here acted like it was really something. 'lol'.

Vienna Ensemble 3 works on Tiger, it will load VSL, and Apple plugins from like 'AU Lab' or somewhere, I forget.

Installed demo of Reaper, will take some time to get to know it. I'll look into networking later and see if I have ppc compatible installers for VEP.

Digital Performer 7 was still UB, which means it will run in Power PC. Although a little heavy, it is very powerful and a great DAW, very well integrated in Mac OS X, and it doesn't require any dongle.

Logic 7 runs smoothly in Leopard, and is a great solution, too.

Another one which is UB is Sagan Tech Metro, but I think the latest version is no longer UB.

Reaper is the most modern DAW still supporting Power PC AFAIK.

Metro is still universal binary. Doesn't look as promising as Reaper though.

Just an update.
Installed Logic 7, Logic 9, Reaper demo and Tracktion 2 (unauthorized) on that old iBook.
Created identical projects in all four of them: highly polyphonic pianotrack that I played at home triggering a heavily scripted instruments with around 2GB of samples in Kontakt 3. DFD of course :) Test with Kontakt GUI off:
Logic 9 uses around 80% CPU, 20 Threads and 350MB of real memory. CPU spikes kill playback.
Logic 7 uses around 70% CPU, 19 Threads and 360MB. Less CPU spikes, still not good.
Tracktion uses around 65% CPU, 9 Threads and 325MB. CPU spikes don't interrupt playback.
Reaper is a winner: 60% CPU, 7 Threads, 260MB. No playback interruptions either. Glad Reaper still makes my iBook useful for what I need to do right now :)

naaaaah, these are pretty useless. They're cool though :) I got the biggest, fastest, maxed out final build of the white iBook, lol. A whopping 1.5GB of RAM xD
