Help With Hanging Notes (Cubase)?

Hi Folks,

I'm having a problem with hanging notes in Cubase 7.5.

I'm primarily a guitar player, and most of my recording is done with microphones, so I'm secondarily a MIDI guy with a limited understanding of MIDI problems. So forgive me if this is a silly question. :)

Here is the problem:

I recorded a MID track consisting of a series of sustaining block chords. Simple stuff.

When I copy and pasted the part, the notes from the first (original) part sustain into the duplicate part - despite the fact that the notes definitely end at the end of the measure. There is no hangover in the MIDI part itself. They are simple 1/4 and 1/8 notes, and they end at the end of each measure (and begins exactly on 1 of the downbeat).

For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to stop the part from sustaining and bleeding into the new - duplicated - part.

There is probably some incredibly simple explanation, but I am at a loss and welcome any tips or suggestions.

A few quick thoughts to help with troubleshooting this.

- What plugin are you using, and what patch? Are you using an instrument setup with a long release?
- Open the cubase list editor to make sure you see a note on and off.

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond. Here is what I can tell you:

The song uses the following VSTi. Some have longish releases, some none at all:

Arturia SEM V
Arturia Jupiter-8V
Sample Tank 2: French Horns and Choral HENRI Organ
NI B4

I opened the List Editor, but have to apologize for not being sure how to read it. I could not see any specific mention of note on or off there - but I can see that the last two notes indicate "sustain."

I did use the sustain pedal at various points. Might that be the culprit?

Forgive my ignorance. I've been recording for more than 30 years, but rarely have the need for anything more than very basic MIDI usage.

Extend the part boundary to the right and chances are you'll find the CC64 is still going. ie., switch it off.

Thanks so much! I'll try that. :)

Quick 'n dirty solution (maybe) - use the length limit function in the inspector.

You're in an amazing state - so stay there.

I feel like a complete idiot, but I cannot figure out where to how to make sure the last chord notes are turned off at the end of the measure.

While I could just redo the part, I want to understand what the problem is and how to fix it.

If anyone would be so kind as to take a look at the MIDI list editor and let me know what I need to do, I would be most grateful:

I see the last CC64 message is '127' or ON.

Yeah, just delete that last CC64 with the value of 127. That will leave you with the final CC64 message of zero or off at 71.1.1.28. You can slide that all the way over to the last snap value (72.x.x.x)if you think you need that sustain value in there, which it doesn't look like because those note lengths extend to the end of the part.

Thanks! :)
