I keep forgetting I have this and then rediscovering it. Holy cow! I keep hearing blurbs talking about "unheard-of buffer effects" but this thing lets you create your own buffer effects using a very open and logical system.

You can do samplerate reduction... with feedback... throw in some subtle repeat madness, and then modulate it for a flanging effect. And when you over/underclock the read head to extremes, it gives a very hardware-sounding output, no aliasing, and only artifacts you'd expect. And the analog modelled VCA and filter stage is perfection.

But alas, because it has a GUI that takes more than 5 minutes to figure out, and it's marketing copy isn't full of hyperbole and "bleeding edge" dance styles that will be forgotten about in a year, I bet many people aren't even aware of this amazing bit of gear.

I have it... It's great, and sounds very warm. It can create some really original stuff.

It's a pain in the arse to program imo. I still can't predict how it will sound - That's probably due to my immensely small attention span.
I will take the Lord's name in vain, whenever I want. Hail Satan! And his little goblins too.

Each time I fire it up, I seem to find new FSU possibilities, applicable to any source material. It's an immensely satisfying piece of software. Highly recommended.

No, it's not just you, it can be quite difficult to get exact results with it. I understand the basis of it, but still end up flipping switches randomly half of the time. Though in a way, that's the beauty of it. You can approach it logically and set it up with a design in mind, or you can just try each switch one by one and see if you like the effect. And all the while you're learning about how different sounding buffer-based effects all have a common backbone to them.

It's fascinating to hear the transition between repeat effects and sample and hold, for example. And if all else fails, you can just keep hitting the randomize button!

I think its great for ambient sounds as a send effect.

Having multiple permut8 sends for a few ambient pad sounds can really add a ton of glitchy, computer, distorted wonders.

Also it can do saturation quite well too

Of all the plugins I own, Permut8 is the most rewarding when it comes to experimenting.
I have a lot of admiration for Sonic Charge. It's such a forward-thinking company and the exact opposite of many copycats out there.

That is sadly how I would probably describe it.
I just cannot get into the gui workflow...
It almost seems purposefully obfuscated. Its a whole 'concept' that is not necessarily focused on usability.
I chalk it up to Magnus' genius being too much for me to keep up with. :hihi:

Glad I'm not the only one! :)

I find that I don't use it that often... But when I do, it produces something pretty special. And its unpredictability is part of the fun as well.

While it's one of those plugs for me, that even though I don't use it as much as I should, I'm glad I have it.

That's exactly how I feel about it :hihi:
It does nice things though, I just don't know how :D

Permut8 is definitely something special and has been on my "I have to get this" list for a long time!

I'm especially curious to see with what kind of alternate firmwares people will come up over time!

Actually my only real complaint is that activating the alternate engines is too weird/convoluted. I'd have hoped for a simple menu system.

You can load a preset bank that uses a different preset, there is no need to use the neerdy console.

I really love Permut8, maybe because I love to be surprised by a plugin. But I also understood enough in the meantime, to know how to archive own ideas.

Here you can hear a track where I use about 10 instances of Permut8 ;-):

/\ Thanks, I didn't know you could just load a bank to get the different engines. Will have to try that out now :)
