Trouble exporting mp3, T5

Edit: problem fixed. now it works. not sure what was going on and no time to explore.

When I try to export as mp3, Tracktion 5 says it has downloaded and installed the LAME encoder, but then it hasn't and it resets to export as wav. Tried this multiple times with same result.

Are there step-by-step instructions somewhere for me to follow to install the lame encoder? I've gone to the settings page, and set the LAME location (with two different versions of lame.exe, and also with a version of lame_enc.dll).

I did a search, but kept running into dead ends.
