I'm getting some CPU spikes using a couple of soft synths notably Diva and Omnisphere.
Will extra RAM help the situation, or is more the processor?
I have a PC with these specs :
HP Z420, Intel Xenon E5-1620@ 3600MHz, 8GB RAM,
Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

It's Diva fault. You need a year 2020 CPU to run it smoothly.

I know Diva is quite CPU intensive. I think I've got a fairly powerful PC, but it doesn't handle everything.
Would upgrading to 16GB RAM help, or is it not a RAM issue?

No, not RAM issue at all... Diva is an amazing CPU hog so no surprises here. Try tweaking "quality" settings or that multicore thing.

you read that he have problems with omnisphere as well? saying that 8gb should be enough. i think it could be a driver or system issue. it could be everything.pinkpanther wrote:No, not RAM issue at all... Whoever wants music instead of noise, joy instead of pleasure, soul instead of gold, creative work instead of business, passion instead of foolery, finds no home in this trivial world of ours.

Yes but Diva seems the most suspicious CPU killer. Once she is toned down we can investigate the rest

I think your CPU should be just fineAmbient Indigo wrote:I know Diva is quite CPU intensive. I think I've got a fairly powerful PC, but it doesn't handle everything.
It would be great if you could describe the kind of CPU spikes you're getting, e.g. randomly, on note start, with certain presets, high notes, low notes, with certain effects enabled, multicore on or off.
Also, we have posted a build in our support forum that measures CPU internally with a pretty precise clock, and can log this into a file. Just download the version from http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... 1&t=409030 and craete an empty text file called Diva.log (without .txt ending) on your desktop. Start your host, play away until the spikes occur and maybe send us the file to support at u-he dot com.
Cheers,

As already stated, RAM isn't the problem. You don't mention a soundcard - its a big part of things. A decent soundcard with good ASIO drivers works wonders. Always worth doing the usual for any DAW :

Always worth running DPC latency checker as well to see how your system is running for low latency audio :

What's an Intel Xenon?
In case you mean Xeon, aren't those server cpu's? Are they ideal for that kind of application? Just wondering...

Diva runs almost fine on my E7-8891 v2 Xeon. Maybe Diva 2 is better optimized.

Thanks for the feedback guys
Urs, I will check out that other thread and report. The spikes happen only on certain patches. I was using the "Great" accuracy, with Multicore button off - turning the Multicore ON made a big difference - no spikes so far with that ON.
Yes, its a Xeon, not Xenon. Build was recommended for use with my DAW, Sonar.
Soundcard is Saffire Pro 24.
Using the DPC Latency checker, I found a pad in Diva which cause the CPU spikes in my DAW (Sonar) but the latency wasn't affected, staying around or below 60 us the whole time.

Xeons work fine for DAW use, they're just overkill for the average user. Some pro DAW builders offer Xeon options for folks who need tons of simultaneous I/O or live multi-track processing.fluffy_little_something wrote:Xeon, aren't those server cpu's? Yep, I was gonna recommend that, but I see you already found it. I can't use Diva very well without that enabled.Ambient Indigo wrote:turning the Multicore ON made a big difference - no spikes so far with that ON.

No, he means the Xenu, the Scientologist-developed CPU...fluffy_little_something wrote:What's an Intel Xenon?

I run multiple DIVAs on an overclocked intel i7 920 from 2009. If you have crackling sound you're asio buffer is too small. Enabling multicore spreads out the workload. RAM size does nothing for u-he synths. It helps sample instruments.
