Nodal is actually pretty handy for creating beats. I keep forgetting to buy a copy of the full version when i got money.

Noatikl is also pretty good. http://www.intermorphic.com/ (There is a AU/VST version)

GeoSonix was forked in 2011 from open source project IanniX. Since then GeoSonix has added many features taking it in the direction of slightly more "mainstream" music.

Worth noting that if you buy the Mac version from the Apple Store, that is all you get. If you buy direct from Monash, same price, you get both Windows and Mac versions…..

I have Mbira Gen32 loaded as a vst in cubase 5 with its own midi channel, how do you configure playback for that? I have midi lights flashing but no sound.

Some apps I've used with Linux :

blue (Csound-based)
http://blue.kunstmusik.com/

Pure Data
http://puredata.info/

GRACE/Common Music
http://commonmusic.sourceforge.net/

OpenMusic
http://repmus.ircam.fr/openmusic/home

RtCmix

stanlea already mentioned SuperCollider3 and athenaCL. There are other Csound-based environments you might find interesting, e.g. CsoundAC, CsoundQt, and AlgoScore.

Awesome, those look perfect. Will take me some time to try them all, I'm still trying to figure out how to get sound on playback from Mbira Gen32 with cubase 5, any help with that would be appreciated. Thanks!

I am not familiar with Cubase, so I can't offer specific help, but MbiraGen outputs MIDI so you should route the midi output to a synth to trigger the notes that MbiraGen selects. Maybe someone with specific knowledge of Cubase can chime in with instructions to set up the MIDI routing?

Insert Mbira Gen as instrument by pressing F11, then insert a synth in another track (any method of inserting). Now, you can see in the 'Midi in' of the synth a choice of Mbira Gen, choose it. Don't forget to enable 'monitor' in the synth track, now if you hit play, you will hear some sounds ;-)

btw, this apply also on other Midi tools like BlueARP ..etc.

Btw, GRACE/Common Music and OpenMusic both support standard notation, in GRACE via the FOMUS extension, directly in OM.

ah. if you are settling for vst in a vst host, then i can answer your enquiry. hyperion vst is foremost among my generative sequencers, there are a few others i also would select (populus, miniseries/series, circuit). there's a video for hyperion on youtube (account "atomic traveller").
