The original vocal is real soulful too:

This one is a great one:

And Chronicle's son is one of the greatest at the moment:

Augusts Pablo mentioned so have to give a mention to his son Addis too, continuing the musical works with his debut album right now:

Nice story how he got his melodica! You can find him on Soundcloud, too.

And out of recent roots music out of Jamaica, this deserves a mention:

That's Overstand entertainment - Militancy riddim.

For a long time I thought the best guitar solo album was Ernest Ranglin's early 2000s jazzy solo Below the bassline, lot of classic riddim Ranglin played on in the 70s re-lick with a jazz approach. But then, there's been a lot of good stuff coming out of Virgin Islands and this man Tuff Lion is a regular guitarist on a lot of record coming out of there and his album Ten strings is just magnificent. Like this:

Too many best song! Consider this:

That's my choice too. I've listened to that song hundreds of times over the years, and I never get tired of it.

Nice One - King Tubby's 'Zion Gate Dub' is also a great dub track

Yeah, there's been a lot of awesome dub produced over the years, which is why I think it's limiting to put 'song' in the title of the thread - definitely way too many great instrumental tracks to exclude them.

Out of instrumental reggae (not dub), I think this is the best, not sure though:

edit: On second thought, there's always the keyboard king himself:

My interest in reggae started with The Orb. Towers of dub has always been a big influence to go back and check out 70's stuff.

When it comes to modern stuff, must admit I was completely gobsmacked listning to The Bug's - London Zoo. What an unbelieveable album, so simple, but so raw it cuts deep!

First time I listened to that it felt like the first time I heard Die Klang Der Familie :tu:

I had no idea too, I used to think Ska was Reggae.

But it's all good.

Never saw a Ska song go down bad on a good Reggae night.

Bob Marley and Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer were in a Ska band first of all weren't they, I think.

Pretty sure they were. Even they thought Ska was Reggae.

So Marley and Tosh, et. al. weren't Reggae? I beg to differ. And, if memory serves, Ska, at the time was a more uptempo genre. I haven't looked any of this up, and it's possible that defninitions have changed.

Regardless, my answer:

1) anything by Marley and Tosh
2) Easy All Stars' Dub Side of the Moon and Sgt. Pepper always make me smile. Very clever.

Why wouldn't King Tubby's work be considered as songs?
"Song" is pretty informal, so don't get too anxious. :)
I mean, anyway, if King Tubby couldn't be considered as songs, nether could my link in the OP, because it's just Lee Perry's cutted overdub of another track (though better imo).

And most of what King Tubby put out, also had appeared as vocal versions (songs). So needs a bit of digging to decide if they are the best of the best of the best.

For example:

A song has a singer, and it is sung. If there is no singer, it is not a song. I know it's a common mistake that people make, but it would make it more clear if song wasn't specified in the thread title.

I think this is the best reggae song about diet and nutrition:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLqjLn0W5K0

I think it's the best diet and nutrition song in any genre. (Perhaps Tony Allen's Homecooking come close second)

Another tune I find fascinating, as it deals with "alternative" history telling

Don't need to get into any competition naming the most obscure reggae artist we can think of. Sometimes the most famous are simlpy the best, and that's how they became famous.

Easy Skanking by Sir Bob.

Play that and it's instant summer, even if it's snowing outside.
