Is there anything comparable in quality to paid offerings?

This is free now, but I can't find where to download it from, I'm sure you'll be able to find it:

This was a long time ago, and it was first version of Barricade ToneBoosters http://www.jeroenbreebaart.com/

Now it is not free. But this one is: http://www.toneboosters.com/tb-barricade-cm/

If you are looking for really good limiter for free the Vladg's Limiter No. 6 is really good choice.

If you are looking for great and cheap limiter, TB Barricade is all you need.

Lookahead Limiter and Limiter No. 6 are my favorite ones atm, both really good on master.

W1 Limiter is nice too if you ask me.

Vlad's Limiter 6 is the very best. It even protects you from inter sample peaks. I like it even more than many commercial offerings.

Limiter 6 is even better than TB Barricade according to my own tests. You can push it even harder and louder without sounding unmusical. And I've found that TB Barricade doesn't stop all ISPs.

It looks like Jeroen has taken his old plugins offline and you can't dl them any more from his old site: http://www.jeroenbreebaart.com/

You can still dl from here though:
http://web.archive.org/web/201306081839 ... lugins.zip

This bundle includes the mighty Red Phatt Pro, a most awesome compressor.

Grab it while you can. Jeroen could get it taken down if he wanted, but I assume he knows about it and is just letting it go. It's all good.

I've got everything he's ever done except for about 3 or 4 plugins. But I really love his older stuff too.

Aradaz Maximizer:

LoudMax:

Both of these are exceptionally good limiters, and make very good track limiters coz they have very low latency. Loudmax has 1.25ms. In fact, I think the Aradax maximizer has 0 latency, if that is possible. It is a very capable limiter though. Very transparent if you are just using it for catching peaks as you would do on a track basis. Reaper reports its latency as 0 anyway, so...

They aren't strictly free but donationware.

I've chucked them a few bucks for a beer, maybe you could too if you use them a lot.

But even though they are low footprint, you can still use them on a master bus as well as per track. You can get very high levels of gain reduction with these before artifacts.

It's funny, I've never been able to get anything useable out of that thing. It's a shame cos the gui is awesome, it's got sidechain capability and wealth of other great features but... it just never does what I expect it to. I think it's the attack that's the main prob - it always seems too grabby no matter how much you lengthen it.

As for limiters - my goto is the old version of Barricade. Does everything I want a limiter to. If that doesn't get the results I want I try the TLS pocket limiter (which is a bit dirtier sounding) and if that fails I turn off the computer, give my ears a rest and come back to it later... In my opinion, when mastering, the limiter is not that important - it's what comes before it that makes the bigger difference.

Yeah, it's funny alright. I've never been able to put a Red Phatt Pro on a drum bus and not get a pumping hyped up beefy mix going. It's just instant goodness. Never fails. It is also pretty easily tweaked. I suppose when you know your way around a compressor then this makes it easy, but nothing odd or unusual here, pretty standard stuff. I love it to bits. I get the same vibe from my Focusrite Scarlett Compressor as well.

As for the old version of Barricade, I am sure that is more than good enough for most people and applications. Jeroen seems to be refining his art and his science, but pretty soon the law of diminishing returns are going to come into play even for him. I love his stuff though, and I love his whole ethos.

As a side note - I've pretty much bought one by one the whole of the Audio Damage suite, and for me, they are the Art side of things, and I pretty much have everything by ToneBoosters, and they are the Science side of things. I could happily do away with everything else, but these do me proud. I could make sweet music for the next 20 years with nothing else.

The TLS/TbT stuff by Daniel is exceptional too. TubeLimit is actually 0 latency as well, so that would also be another great choice for a track limiter. You can still dl it from his site:
http://hem.bredband.net/tbtaudio/archiv ... lugins.htm

I did a lot of research when I was testing limiters and the TLS Maximizer is up there with the best.

These would be my top 5 Free Limiters:

(in no particular order)

1: TLS Maximizer:

2: Aradaz Maximizer:

3: LoudMax:

4: Barricade:

5: Kjaerhus Classic Limiter:

Edit:
Just want to say, you might want to check out the latest version of Barricade:

It isn't free, but it is more than worth the money.
