Not all Vocaloids sound like Japanese school girls
If anyone knows how well Piapro works on a Mac I would be interested to hear their experience

Hi
I don't know about Piapro but you can download and try the Yamaha editors, links here:
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set ... 814&type=3
I am currently demoing the Vocaloid editor for Cubase (Win7 64bi) it and it works great running the Avanna and Prima vocaloids, the problem is where to buy it without having to import the boxed version from Japan.
Hope this helps.

I got decent results with Sonika but "she" sounded like she had a bad accent despite being designed for English (the first). Using the vocaloid 2 editor was not happy times as I recall.
Maybe because I don't speak Japanese, but Vocaloids seem to sound oddly normal at J-Pop sounding shit Which makes sense, of course. But anything "expressive" they fall flat on their synthetic faces.
Just the nature of the thing, I suppose. Still, I got a lot of use out of that bitch by slathering it with reverb and recording, chopping the end off, reversing it, synthetic choirs, great eerie pad sounds... just treat it like a formant synth

I own several of the Vocaloid synths - Lola sounds the best. You can do very realistic background vocals with it.

Also check out these demos:
http://www.zero-g.co.uk/store/vocaloid- ... os-w21.php
They're not terrible. Just remember, to get good results with these instruments, you have to work your butt off to make them sound good - experts can, pardon the pun, make them 'sing' while people who have no idea says 'they suck'. You get out of it what you put in.
Overall, I think they sound just fine with enough work. Vocaloid 2 technology is way better than the newer Vocaloid 3 - the editor is simply easier to use - a lot like Virsyn's Cantor instrument which I also own and use quite a bit.
Don't knock it till you know how to use it and can produce useable results. Don't also expect it to replace a real human - it never will.

If you look on the facebook link it gives English instructions on how to download the trial.
(There is an English manual that comes with Piapro)

Vocaloid was intended as a sketching tool, for which it is more than serviceable, and has clearly surpassed that goal. Anyone who finds it disappointing was probably expecting too much? Mitchie M tracks sound more like a real singer than some actual pop singers who are made to sound robotic. But getting that kind of expression out of the product must be very laborious (same as working with violin samples for example).
I find the musical movement more interesting than the products themselves. Writing for Vocaloid has allowed people some sort of creative separation. The lyrics don't have to be tied to their own image or the image of some real pop star. The barrier for entry is also low. The resulting body of music has been very diverse (well... in Japan..). I mean, we live in an age where concept albums and character songs are pretty much non-existent. We get club bangers and love songs and more of the same. But with Vocaloid people had the perfect opportunity to write songs about a character and a lot of interesting stuff has come from that.

I totally agree Nystul
After getting Prima in latest offer from Zero-G I'm having fine fun.

It's great value for what you get, and I'm looking to buy more Vocaloids in future.
