Reverb can be a cpu hog, and to get such incredible sounds without having to jump in the bizarre trend to buy a machine every 2 years (one should be forced to keep the oldies until the room was full :lol: ) is - amazing. I remember some demos from 2011 or abouts that, well, already were too much for my machine without giving similar great results.
Well, a lot of the thanks go to David Griesinger and Barry Blesser, who developed these efficient algorithm topologies in the 1970s and 1980s.
Guys, I'm happy (and that is not only because at Midsommarafton we had a lot to drink :clown: )
I just Googled Midsommarafton. Lots of bonfire pictures. That looks cool. I like bonfires. In Seattle, we have the Fremont Solstice Parade & Naked Bike Ride. Which is great, if you want to see a bunch of hippie dongs. I'd rather have a bonfire.

TL;DR:

There are 10 presets for VVV and 4 presets for VRoom in this jumble of a post.
Dig and ye shall find.

I compare VVV with VRoom and give empirical data for my findings.

End conclusion: Gotta have both! But the overlap is worthy of note.

I provide a preset for VVV users that is practically identical (in my mind at least) to the excellent 'Lexiclone Small Plate' preset from VRoom.

(At least it was the closest I could come).

Once more into the ramble, dear friends...

I just bought VRoom a couple of days ago, despite not getting along with it in my testing. That was based on the fact that I wanted a quick, transparent, yet dense 'verb to give that almost 'invisible' sheen to things on my tracks. A thousand people can't be wrong. So I took a flyer...

Here are my findings after being a pretty happy VVV user for a good few months. I haven't used it all that much, but we get along great and it is always there if I need it. It is kind of like the last line of defence for RRS (Reverb Resistant Sounds). If all else fails, it's time to get heavy. That heaviness is VVV. Never let me down yet. To be fair, I'm a reverb noob, so I must admit to being a bit intimidated. And not least because of all the hardcore Reverb Beards out there (funnily enough, sporting a bit of a Grizzly Adams myself this end too, but let's not go there).

So, I set myself a simple task. It's all about the process. Just ask Chris Randall.

That process was to be: knock up a sterile breakbeat on a beatbox and then put a bit of 'room' on it like I usually do with Tila. I have found it is easier to make a reverb sound good by putting it on percussion like congas and whatnot, but an 808 type of thing doesn't flatter to deceive so much. So I got it going on with my Fruity Loops. The force was strong and I started taking things seriously. It happens like that sometimes. After 3 hours of trying to find out how to copy a sound in FPC (I wish I WAS joking), it was game on. And you think you got it bad having to read this shit!

My beat was not so sterile. It was kicking like a mofoing mule. With an attitude problem. AND a chip on its shoulder. What is a PRODUCAH to do? Why, not forget why he came. We want a nice little silky sheen round that bitching beat. Just make it sound like it was recorded in a 'normal' room, and not in somebody's breakfast box. With a lot of banananananas.

Let's be clear about the 'process' here. I have just bought VRoom and I am looking for a very small plate type effect to give a bit of 3D to some drums.

I've got my drums, let's find the 'verb.

So, pretty quickly I found something that was doing what I wanted. It was the Lexiclone Small Plate to be found in the VRoom Factory Presets. I was cruising for Plates. Small ones. What can I say? I was looking for a good time. Bingo! I called mine VRoom-Subtle-Plate after some very minor tweaking after putting it on a send. And when I say 'minor', I mean 'minor'. I would post a screenshot, but no need, you all have a copy at home. You can see for yourselves. You have it in the Factory Bank (The Lexiclone).

Now to see how that compares to what I can do with my Plates in VVV. In VVV they are actually called Plates, so that narrowed it down a bit for me.

This is what I came up with:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8602770/User.zip

I've called it VRoom-Subtle-Plate. This is for VVV keep in mind.
I have also called it VRoom-Subtle-Plate in VRoom, obviously.

I found the nearest plate in VVV and tweaked the rest by feel not by spreadsheet.

It is practically identical to the Lexiclone preset from VRoom, so I'm not claiming to have 'invented' it. That preset was the closest starting point for what I wanted to achieve - a small room 'ambience' for a beatbox kind of groove to stop it sounding like it was recorded in a biscuit tin. I use Signal To Dust Tila for this usually as mentioned and nothing comes close for its speed and 'invisibility'.

The sound did change a bit later when changing the program material (altering the source beatbox drum sounds). But for testing purposes, I was more than happy.

I suppose I should provide the 'beat'. Soon come.

Just to clarify, or possibly muddy the waters, I am including a few presets from VRoom for reference. The file 'VRoom-Subtle-Plate' is in there, plus a few variations on a theme.

This is the file to compare to the original Lexiclone Plate. And obviously to the VVV preset of the same name.

One of the reasons I made this little test was because a lot of people seemed to be saying (I only noticed a few actually) that VRoom wasn't 'the best' at plates. So I decided to check it out. I've been very happy with VVV for plates so it was a good starting point to see how the two compare.

Keep in mind I have had VRoom in my vst folder for well over a year and despite trying to use it a couple of times (after I got over the horrible GUI [which I now adore]), it just never clicked with me. I either couldn't dial it in, or it took me too long to achieve what I could do more easily with my other more familiar 'verbs.

I was very pleased with myself in being able to get VVV to sound like VRoom in such a short space of time. I didn't do it scientifically, but by ear and it was pretty close. Then again, what I was trying to do was a very simple thing in reverb world. But, maybe the hardest!

Here is the dry beat I used for testing:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/860 ... a-TEST.wav

And here are the VRoom presets:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/860 ... ETS%3D.zip

Conclusion:
Both VVV and VRoom can do very very short reverb times that almost transparent with source material such as drums. They are as good as, in fact, better than Tila (which is free so not knocking it), with one of the main factors being practically no cpu hit when used like this, and another being versatility.

I know that others use Poor Plate for these comparisons, and I don't even want to get into my go to Plate for Drums and just about anything - ADVerb. That is a beast, in a very tame and subtle way. I wonder who did the coding on that one. I have Eos too, and that is also beyond the scope of this article. I know who coded that one. :-)

Edit:
Ah well. Just a silly thought. Never mind me.

I'm thinking about doing a project with only vocal and acoustic guitar. Does anyone have some presets made they like for that? I can't decide if I should use a plate on the tracks and maybe a hall or room on the master bus, but it will be fun playing around with it.

...about a year away from making music, I found this^^. Not sure if you'd love that frog song all sing at "midsummer night" in Sweden though :D. It's a funny old party in all northern countries where they had extremely harsh winters and were glad that up in northern Sweden the sun did not go down at all around June21-24 and so on. Yet what it had to do with the lovely Vintage verb - hmm, I've forgotten about that^^. My presets are not en par with the great ones posted yet, so that can't have been the reason I blurbed about it:)

I'm no Patchpool but here are some presets I made and use often in my work. :hihi:

the names more often than not are from the track they originated from, and not necessarily a description of the sound the settings produce

Anyone with presets for Solo Piano recordings?

I liked a lot the "My hall" presented here above. The "Empty piano" in page 1 seems nice as well, but it seems it is for a mix right?...

I'd like something to go along the lines of your typical Deutsche Grammophone piano recordings ambience.

Thanks for the presets guys! :)
ontol, even though your patches have a good amount of decay, they are very cool: especially the empty sun and flashbulb! :tu:

Been playing with VVV quite a bit over the past few days, love it! :)

here's a diffused echo-verb: ...The Hall algos with large size values makes for echoes since they go far beyond other "smaller" algos. Diffusion parameters more to minimum to "morph" from reverb to delay-echo

Try on stabby/percussive stuff, play with shape: size and attack parameters to fine-tune time and character of the echoes as well as predelay and decay.

<ValhallaVintageVerb pluginVersion="1.0.1" presetName="Diff Echoverb" Mix="0.300000012" PreDelay="0.338999987" Decay="0.545000017" Size="1" Attack="0.810000002" BassMult="0.606999993" BassXover="0.282582551" HighShelf="0.536000013" HighFreq="0.5" EarlyDiffusion="0.252000004" LateDiffusion="0.175999999" ModRate="0.483999997" ModDepth="0.203999996" HighCut="0.814999998" LowCut="0.100000001" ColorMode="0.666666687" ReverbMode="0.0416666679"/>

------------

Smooth Dark Room:

<ValhallaVintageVerb pluginVersion="1.0.1" presetName="Smooth Dark Room" Mix="0.340000004" PreDelay="0.211999997" Decay="0.328000009" Size="1" Attack="0.296999991" BassMult="0.207000002" BassXover="0.335999995" HighShelf="0.5" HighFreq="0.275000006" EarlyDiffusion="1" LateDiffusion="0.879999995" ModRate="0.156000003" ModDepth="0.263999999" HighCut="0.419999987" LowCut="0.0949999988" ColorMode="0.333333343" ReverbMode="0.125"/>

---------

Here's a tight ambiance... change the color using the SHAPE parameters...

<ValhallaVintageVerb pluginVersion="1.0.1" presetName="Tight Amb" Mix="0.400999993" PreDelay="0" Decay="0.0920000002" Size="0.296999991" Attack="1" BassMult="0" BassXover="0.455000013" HighShelf="0.159999996" HighFreq="0.224000007" EarlyDiffusion="1" LateDiffusion="0.796000004" ModRate="0.555999994" ModDepth="0.148000002" HighCut="0.658999979" LowCut="0.0469999984" ColorMode="0.666666687" ReverbMode="0.375"/>

---------

For a good chorus try the Halls and Sanctuary especially...
On this preset try messing with the Shape: size and attack will cross-fade between two different chorus flavors since it's the blend between early VS late reflections on the Sanctuary algo..

<ValhallaVintageVerb pluginVersion="1.0.1" presetName="Chorus Gentle Shimmer" Mix="0.5" PreDelay="0" Decay="0" Size="0.25" Attack="0.5" BassMult="0.324000001" BassXover="0.282582551" HighShelf="1" HighFreq="0.5" EarlyDiffusion="0.703999996" LateDiffusion="0.819999993" ModRate="0.796000004" ModDepth="0.363999993" HighCut="1" LowCut="0.0529999994" ColorMode="0.666666687" ReverbMode="0.375"/>

request/question:

VVV just got a sweet update...
What algo(s) to use for emulating the character found in (Audio Damage) ADVerb (vintage digital plate reverb) or getting similar results?

From what I understand ADVerb is emulated after Lexicon model 200

I haven't heard ADVerb in a while, but the Lexicon 200 would have 2 separate plate reverb algorithms in it. The original Lex 200 Plate algorithm would be closest to the VintageVerb Dirty Plate, while the Lex 200 Rich Plate would probably be closer to Smooth Plate (assuming that the Lex 200 has the same huge size characteristics of the Lexicon 224XL Rich Plate). However, Smooth Plate won't have any of the "gated" artifacts of some of the Lexicon hardware, so the original VintageVerb Plate algorithm might be a better choice.
