so now that sound cloud is going to start placing ads, I was thinking its time to find an alternative. I have the pro account, and it's really only for sharing with friends and people I collaborate with. no one is going to want to sit through an ad to hear my songs, so i'm starting to investigate other options. a little irritated that I get to pay for people having to sit through an advertisement, but that's for another thread.

I don't put things up in "albums" so not sure that something like bandcamp is right. I put up single songs, rough mixes, and samples and loops that I have made. anyone using any other services that are easy for non-geeks to navigate, that can be shared in a blog and on social media, and that don't cost a fortune? thanks in advance.

ReverbNation is a clunky, cluttered, sh!tty looking mess (IMNSHO) that loves to spam its users, but that's one free alternative.

I actually meant to include that in my description as not being an option. i have friends who use reverberation and I can't be bothered to listen to their music as it's such a pain in the ass.

that looks pretty interesting, have you tried it yourself? wondering if you can make playlists at all?

Youtube. It may not have the networking features, but as a pure media sharing platform it's brilliant. Everybody knows how to work a Youtube video and recognises the brand, the audio quality ironically kicks the pants off every music streaming platform I'm aware of, and the stats are ultra detailed. All for free! Just upload your track as video with a static background, making sure that your video uses an uncompressed audio track.

A: Ads will not be served on any of your tracks if you are a Free, Pro, or Pro Unlimited user. They are only served on the tracks of Premier partners with their explicit consent.

Q: Will ads play in front of my track without my permission?

A: No. Ads will not be placed on your sound without your explicit consent

that's not what the email I just got from them says:

"Hey michael,
Big news to share today: I am proud to announce the launch of On SoundCloud, our new creator partner program. On SoundCloud lays the foundation for creators to make money from their work on the platform.
As artists ourselves, Eric and I started SoundCloud with a simple vision. We wanted to develop tools for creators, help them reach fans all over the world, and shape a way we could pay the creators who fuel the growth of SoundCloud.
We’re laying this foundation by initially inviting a small group of creators to become Premier partners in the On SoundCloud program, enabling them to make money on the platform. Over time we will roll this out across the creator community.

To make this possible, we’re introducing advertising from select brand partners to SoundCloud. When someone sees or hears an ad, they’re supporting an artist. We will include ads gradually and bring on more advertisers as we grow On SoundCloud.
Everybody at SoundCloud is really excited about bringing this creator program to you. We often hear people say, ‘I’m on SoundCloud’. Now we’re happy to be able to offer even more for the millions of creators who have made it the best place in the world to share and discover music & audio.

Hearthis seems to be a good idea, they combine Soundcloud and Mixcloud.. similar features, for Soundcloud users very familiar to use. Option to re-upload (don't need a premium account).. cover, background image, artist info/image/links, sharing, sets... I have not found things which are missing.

The free account is limited to 5000 plays (this means plays for all tracks and mixes)
Interesting thing for the premium account: higher bitrates up to 320kbs for playback but also for lower bitrates to prevent sharing (!) eg. you can use 96kbs for some kind of preview version... and the price is Afaik the same as for the Soundcloud Pro Account (24€ for a year).

Embedding in Facebook etc. works the same and they providing a own player.

Hearthis is based in Germany (Chemnitz).

Before you dismiss Soundcloud completely, better learn how to use it properly. For example I couldn't find the link to your Soundcloud page as we speak now.

Reverbnation is IMO no option. I have a account since a long time and have also high rankings in my city/genre but it doesn't help a lot to promote a song or get new fans. To push this in this direction you must buy some promotion stuff... where the results are with my experience not so good.
It's a lot easier with Soundcloud where listeners or other Soundcloud users can share your tracks in the own stream or you can share your track in some of the groups to push it to different people etc. Not to mention that it's a well known platform where you find also a lot of known artists sharing stuff.

I wouldn't jump ship just yet, but it's good I suppose to be preparing for the worst.

that's because I haven't put up a link to my sound cloud page. it's under a different name. there is nothing of interest to anyone there. not dismissing it though,I have really liked the service so far.
