Big sounds like you get in layered sampled instruments work well with simple sounding synths. Adding another thick instrument will muddy it up. A simple sharp punchy vintage synth with a tube distortion effect is what's needed like a minimoog or Korg MS 20. That's why ReFX made Vanguard.
You can layer two simple synths together to get them thicker.
I don't know of any free synths that emulate those.
Try Tyrell N6 http://www.u-he.com/cms/tyrelln6
Or Podolski http://www.u-he.com/cms/podolski

I tried MauSynth, but its big sounds overshadowed Nexus 2 in the mix, so no use for you.Naer wrote:I've tried crystal, but the big sounds of nexus 2 overshadows it in the mix. So?

Crystal may be quieter at default but with compression or even just turning Nexus down, I think you may change your mind. Interesting that a synth can be overly loud like modern music haha!

Nexus is EDM oriented, Crystal is more tailored for ambient, pads, weird textures and so on (IMO). Very different. So I guess the real question is "free instruments that go along well with Nexus 2" for what type of music/genre? What sort of sounds do you prefer? ...etc.
Anyway, there's a big list of freeware plugins right here on KVR. Then there are other sources like VST4FREE and the like. Dig around a bit, watch some demo videos on YouTube and test the plugins yourself It's the only way to tell for sure what works for you
