If Have Presets, Why Not Have Preset Randomizer?

To all developers, please I beg you... include a random preset randomizer built-in in all effects and instrument plugins.
I am guessing that such a feature will make all music tools get used more often than without it.

PS. Thanks very much to all developers for all the freebies and thanks very much to the troubleshooters and bugs spotters who help make plugins better and thanks very much KVR Audio for the existence of the Developer Challenge. :tu:

You mean "...include a random preset randomiser built-in all effects and instrment plugins that would produce musical & usable results", right? :) Otherwise some DAWS already have such a function (at least FL Studio does), but without the dev working in advance on it, the result would be mostly noise - in all forms - all unpleasant :)

On the other hand, you could try this: http://vst-preset-gen.sourceforge.net/ :) Not the best solution, but it does just that: randomly tweaking parameters and saving the resul(s) as preset(s) for that plugin :)

Yeah, I agree, a well thought & implemented random preset generator is cool and might help you understand better how the plugin works ;)

Z3ta+ 2 already has this :D

There are more synths with such a feature, but unless the dev has actually spent some time on fine tuning it, the results will be...just (too) random :) Just turning knobs and altering parameters at random won't produce a pleasing result :) There has to be some "order" in that "random" process ;) IMO ;)

The only DAW I use is REAPER because it's free and lets you save projects. I don't think REAPER has a built-in preset randomizer.

In DC14, the NanoMod 7 is the only synth with a preset randomizer or is it a parameters randomizer? Anyways, most of the randomized results from the NanoMod is not unpleasant at all, to me at least. So it's proof that it's possible to have a "tamed" randomizer built in.

Then there is the very very nice Lucid synth and I am guessing it has a hundred+ randomizable parameters. The developer would know which parameter to randomize and which to leave alone way better than, I could be wrong about this, a typical synth user. Way better than I could, for sure. That's why they are the developer and I am not. I'm just a broke non-pro not-too-techy freeware hoarder guy who wants to use music tools easily. :)

Someone should reverse engineer whatever magical process is behind the randomizer in Oatmeal.
Ive never heard anything like it.
There has to be some special code behind it...

Did not know Oatmeal has a randomizer so I Googled "free synth preset randomizer" and there's a few other synths with randomizers but most seems to be not freeware. It's like "you want this feature, you gotta pay". I'm off to hunt those randomizable freeware. I'll be back later with a list of them, probably, for those who also like built-in randomizers. :)

Cantabile can do randomization with selected parameters and they have a free edition, too. http://www.cantabilesoftware.com/

It doesn't, but there's a (pretty awesome) script made by Xenakios that lets you randomise VST and VSTI parameters in REAPER.

I found it a bit fiddly setting up Python to work with REAPER, but there's stuff on the forum to help. It's worth getting a little technical IMO.

Once you've got it set, it's at your beck and call with a few actions that you can assign to a toolbar or keyboard shortcuts etc. and you can use it with any VST or JS plugin.

Incomplete list of freeware synths that have preset randomizer:

SIM3X - the button is at the back panel
Mr. Alias 2
Oatmeal
Crystal - the button is called Breed
Autogun
Element of Surprise
Motion
Kruudster - the manual mentions it but not really how to use it
Lucid - the manual mentions it but not really how to use it
NanoMod 7 - the button is called Glitch

Actually they don't randomize presets, but randomize the sound on each key press or at a specific rate.
To use the randomization you must turn on the randomizer and set it as a source where it says MOD or similar. Like under FMOD in the Filter section.

I use preset randomization in my host Buzz via it's VST loader. It allows you to select what to randomize and you can morph and breed presets. That's one reason I will not include a randomizer in my plugins right now. The other one is, it will make the project much more complex.

Also if you limit the randomization to only make good sounds you might miss some cool sounds you would never have thought about yourself. Still I mostly use Breeding of two random presets.
Preset randomization and breeding is really fun and I can understand people wanting to have it on their synths. But best is probably to have it in the host/DAW. I think the same about arpeggiators too.

My pleasure harry :)

I hate preset randomizing, things need to be patched better, NOT more complete, I don't need big fat synths to do claps. The developer needs to patch their own software, not 3rd party passers-by.

Why not just close your eyes and then whizz the mouse around for 15 seconds?
