I have never had a clue when it came to sorting out all the genres of electronic music. I didn't know techno from italo, edm from anthem, couldn't tell rap from trap. I'm probably late for school, but I finally found an app to help me out. Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music. http://techno.org/electronic-music-guide/ It's great roadmap/history lesson that is entertaining as well. It covers the gear, the sounds and relations of the music. It even has examples of many of the genres. I don't know how accurate it is, but it's a heck of a lot of fun. Check it out!

It doesn't, and it doesn't matter. Everything prior to a certain point is lumped together as any reasonable person would do, well, in particular, it's ignored. Ishkur's site is primarily a tool for sorting out genres and sub-genres of EDM and for that it's very useful. I think that he's lost interest in it though as it is not very current. Still, for many readers of this board it is a useful reference. I've linked to it a number of times.SODDI wrote:I can't pull it up from the website as the image itself is blocked, but as long as that guide to electronic music begins in 1897, everything's OK.
For the record, he starts in the 50s and makes a great case for doing so. I would suggest that before anyone starts arguing that you should start sooner that you perhaps read what Ishkur has to say about that. It's funny, and hit's the nail on the head. If you don't think that it's funny, you probably aren't the target audience, or, you might need a recto-xylectomy.

That's great, it's been around for a while, but hero worship has been getting worse as EDM has become more mainstream, it (hero worship) has really dulled the scene.dayjob wrote:trancecracker is the most important part of ishkur imo.

This is a funny window looking back into a different age. Hasn't been updated for a decade and so much has changed since then. Dubstep wasn't anywhere to be found. Minimal Techno was nothing but a cute little curiosity. Electronic music was still largely unknown in the American market.

Here is a new genre map, covering all types of music.
It's not 100% accurate, but it's pretty good:

Yeah, I'll say. Many of the examples are simply not very good.ZenPunkHippy wrote:Here is a new genre map, covering all types of music.
