Mics or mic preamps?

This will decide what to replace cause either one of these are bad

Post

Cable connecting the mic with the preamp most likely to be defective.

Always start with the cheapest thing and go to the more expensive...

Since you say preamps - multiple - that is saying you have more than one.

So switch preamp is the first thing I would try.

If mike is condenser with phantom power I would look at that and a said cables.
Some condensers use battery as phantom power that can be out.

But you don't mention defective how?

No sound - disconnect cable from mike and put fingers there to hear the noise created by preamp doing that. Serious hum and noise.

Neither. A cheap microphone lasts at least 20-30 years.

It depends on the mic. Dynamic mics are almost indestructable. Condensers less so. Ribbon mics are the most fragile. But any mic should last a long time if it's handled with care.
