Metrum.
the sonic academy one IS a very good plugin though, and dongle free and cheap, but i can not vouch for the PIB one as i know nothing about it.

I'd not even seen Metrum. Just checked it out on their website though, and £135 just for a kick synth seems a bit too much.

I think they are equal in terms of the kicks they can produce, but I'd give a slight edge to Nicky Romero Kick just based on interface.GFunk wrote:As above......which one wins?

kick can be the most important part of EDM, and you are paying really for manuel's presets more than anything. Besides, the effects section, the layering etc.. it is way beyond anything else on the planet.. it's really rather deep if you go beyond the presets.. so IMO the price is justified since every edm track on the planet has a kick, so i like to have a chance to have the best possible Just me tho and i understand the hesitation. It's definitely one of the "keeps" for me though in the huge slim down i am doing.GFunk wrote:I'd not even seen Metrum. 200 USD is ridiciculous. And I'm not the one saving money on plugins, not at all
PS: I'm very happy with PB. It was and is a steep learning curve, if you never designed your own kicks before and just used samples. I've still have troubles creating house kicks. For techno I get results pretty fast. But I don't give up

This is the first I've heard about Metrum but it's definitely king of the kick plugins. Like that you can import your own samples. Will agree that $200 is high for a kick plugin but then again it is expected with the Vengeance pricing scheme and Theo is correct, EDM is all about the kick. There are 4 layers for you to tweak so lots of possibilities. I think they would sell a lot more if they lowered the price. Even $150 seems high. At this point, I have tons of kick samples that I can import into Nerve or Breaktweaker to layer and edit to get me there. It seems like the workflow might be more convenient in Metrum but not enough to shell out $200. I'll demo this to check it out though.

I prefer Big Kick (from the demo) but before making a choice you should wait for Rob Papen Punch-BD, it's coming soon.

Ohlala... haven't known that RP is coming up with a kick synth. I hope I get it for free, as a Explorer-bundle owner

I have nicky's kick synth and I found it okay, the menu diving is terrible, they say in the next update but it's been months since they've being saying that so don't hold your breathe. also adding your own click samples has to be a click and not the whole kick drum as you can't trim the kick to just get the click sound.
My kicks were good but still felt something lacking from them, the power of a nice kick was hard to get.
Then i got metrum and i must say i didn't even need to try hard to get a very powerfull kick this thing does it and more. importing kicks is easy, the browser menu is better but still could do with improvement. importing kicks is easy, you have effects you can add to each sound of the kick.
people say it's too expensive but as theo said it's the back bone of a good track. in my opinion it's a no brainer, i've wasted more money on other stuff that just sits on my drive not getting used.

am loving sonic academy's kick; find it easy to use (i DO rolloff a lot of lo-mid eq). but it's become the default kick on all my tracks. of course, LOL, this is the kick plugin i OWN, so am obligated to like it..

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned BozDigitalLabs Sasquatch - granted, not really covered on KVR Audio and it's technically not(!) a VSTi (but a VST plugin to enhance drum tracks). But it looks like slightly different-thinking concept than PluginBoutique's BigKick, and a tad more affordable than Vengeance Metrum.
I mean, use something like the old Tonic or Drumatic 3, then apply this plugin and you should get to more modern type kicks, no?
