How to make Vocaloid sound less thin/wimpy?

One thing I notice immediately is that there's no space in your recording. The touch of reverb in the Youtube example goes a long way when it comes to taking Miku out of the computer and making her sound like she's a real person standing in a real space.
As for the rest, I agree there's something different in the character. I'm not a Vocaloid user, so I have no idea how to go about changing that. Hopefully someone else will chip in

Well the syllables in your version are REALLY choppy, which would probably help. I mean, I know Vocaloid is already pretty robotic sounding, but yours sounds especially robotic.
Secondly, as mentioned: reverb.
Thirdly, there is a lower presence to the voice in the original. EQ the low-mid range to add a little more body, also the highs on yours are pretty harsh, reducing those a little might also help out.
It sounds like the attack and the release is what is making yours sound so choppy.

If you allow me, my first impression is that it need to be less staccato to add a bit of realism, would sounds more powered by a human breath IMO, (in fact both original and recreation, tough it might make more sense as it is, when performing inside the whole musical arrangement)skytheguy wrote:Hey all! I've been playing around with the Miku Hatsune vocaloid lately, and I just can't get her to sound firm and clear like she sounds in other songs.
For example, this:

I linked the acapella so it would be easier to just pay attention to the voice.
So, you can hear that it's clear and strong. Now, a bit of the same thing, but without any effects. I recreated it to demonstrate what I mean by 'thin and wimpy'.

Now, I don't think the problem rests in the fact that I haven't put on a compressor/EQ'd it/limited it/etc. as the vocal quality just sounds completely different from the original. There's some portamento going on when I set it up so it wouldn't have portamento, the consonants aren't firm enough, and it just sounds weak overall.
Any advice would be much appreciated Thanks in advance!
...if it ever helps !

To make it less wimpy, run it through the 'Metal Demon' plugin from the Psycho Toolkit by Clone Ensemble.
