How to make that sound...

Ah I should be more precise in my language. I turn the FM knob up half a notch in the filter section of Diva to add a little more life to some patches. Some patches benefit from that, some don't. It seems to work a bit better than LFO modulation maybe because the modulation waveform is higher frequency and/or more complex, so less easily detected by the ear as artificial. I was amazed how turning the FM up all the way can make some patches sound very digital, and totally like another synth!

These sounds are just purely from DIVA in Reaper with no mixing, I don't even know how to do mixing yet  . So far so bad.. or good.. Only made 5 sounds so far. Got to keep at it.

I'd say the important thing to do is keep clarity. I think you should be able to clearly hear the synth itself through the effects, and the effects as a nice finish on the sound. Some exceptions of course. But in general it's the synth itself that I like to hear.

Really I think you want to find out what the synth itself excels at, what it "wants" to do. Sounds can end up weak if something is not set right, so listen out for that. IMO a sound should be solid and consistent usually.

Then it can help if they are expressive, like others mentioned with velocity. Small pitch variations go a long way to making a synth come alive.

Finally, simplicity is beautiful.

But just take your time and do new things every day. There is no way you can't improve if you're thinking about what your doing and you have the time to put in.

Hi Aiyn, thanks for your comments. I respect your sound banks (heard the demos) as every single patch sounds so professional and polished, no hit-and-miss in quality. Also I heard your entry for OSC and really got immersed listening to the soundscape.

I hear you about understanding and displaying each synth's character and strengths. That clarity thing I have yet to achieve. Making a sound is starting to resemble cooking in a way.. a new cook uses too much seasoning, a master-chef uses exactly enough, not one grain more or less.

Really appreciate the comments guys, and am impressed by the talent here on this forum. (Didn't know The Present won the Spectral OSC, wow that was really good too).

For my own direction, I just want to make enchanting sounds that are a complete pleasure to listen to and/or play. Its got to be original in some way, but that is probably very hard with 1000s or is it 100000s of sound patches ever created..

I've been having fun using them in my own arrangements.

Will be sharing them for free soon once I figure out the process how to share presets with the public!
