the answer is the HP Zbook - it'll break the bank, and break your back carrying it (espec the 17") but they're solid machines (in every sense)

Latest news is that Dell have offered to replace the motherboard in order to fix the USB3 hard drive issue ..
Remains to be seen if that fixes the audio problems or not . .. .

Normally, the pops and crackles are a sign of mediocre USB Drivers. I would also make sure you don't have any USB hubs plugged in.

One thing you can try is to disable Core Parking on your laptop? That has helped me get rid of pops.

Instead of registry edits, I think I use the below utility to turn Core Parking off and on...I'm not at my audio laptop so I can't verify.

Thanks, yea actually I have gone as far as removing the Intel USB3 drivers and disabled USB3 from the BIOS, and currently the audio performance is the best it has been so far .. I can see that I'll want to run my own Windows install and not the Dell install.
Cheers for the tips, I'll try the core parking when I get the computer back - Dell are going to replace the mobo; then I'll see where I am ..
