What is needed to connect an E-Guitar to the computer (line input) for recording?
Some kind of amplifier?

Any audio interface should be able to handle it fine, I don't think any problems would be introduced, or that there are any weirdo things you need to connect to beforehand. Some audio interfaces are actually made specifically for the guitar.
My stuff is from 2006, you might find a wealth of info about interfaces here in the computer forum.

This device seems to fit the requirement:Chris-S wrote:What is needed to connect an E-Guitar to the computer (line input) for recording?

But connecting directly to line-input could also work.

I've used that one, it does work well and is the cheapest brand name unit, if you get one I'd recommend using it with Asio4all as your latency will be low without bringing up extra cpu use.

I have one of those to use with my laptop when I'm not at my desk with the mixer. It works quite well, only if you want to be able to monitor playback the Behringer drivers won't work well for this - install ASIO4ALL (http://www.asio4all.com) and set it up so that input is the Behringer sound card, and output is the soundcard you usually use for playback.Chris-S wrote:This device seems to fit the requirement:Chris-S wrote:What is needed to connect an E-Guitar to the computer (line input) for recording?

This is a quality audio in with amplification and does monophonic audio to midi.
Easy to route it though your existing audio output, including setups using asio4all

Ok, now I got my first guitar and I tested the direct connection to the PC's mic in.Chris-S wrote:But connecting directly to line-input could also work.
The sound is horrible. Lot of noise and lack of high freqs.
And a funny effect: The Volume-knob on the guitar scratches like hell.
So, I went to the dealer, he attached the guitar to an amp and there was no
scratching when moving the volume knob.
Who can explain that?
Now looking for an usb interface, top on my list is the Line-6 UX1.

If you're using a guitar you ideally need a high impedance (aka Hi-Z) input, which an ordinary onboard computer interface aint. That impedance mismatch is where your high frequencies went.Chris-S wrote:Ok, now I got my first guitar and I tested the direct connection to the PC's mic in.Chris-S wrote:But connecting directly to line-input could also work.

At the very least you need a DI Box, or a 'proper' audio recording interface. Wouldn't be surprised if it sorts the noise issue; PC sound inputs are really only geared for 'chat type electret microphone setups.

That's because you don't use it enough.Chris-S wrote:Chris-S wrote:But connecting directly to line-input could also work.

Scratching and popping occurs on volume controls because dust with electrostatic properties collects on the pot, or jacks.
Simply playing with the volume knob in most cases will shake lose the dust. Or having a can of dustbuster around and occasionally giving it a quick blast of canned air will also work.
Guitar toggle switches often can cause popping and or become stiffer to operate if you don't use them. A little spray and run the toggle switch through the paces and it'll be good as new.

I've bought the guit (second hand squier 2005 strat) few days ago, so it stood some time in the store. That's because you don't use it enough
As I wrote: the scratching is noticeable only when the guit is connected directly to the PC.
There is no scratch when connected to a hardware amp.
So either: The amp filters out the scratch noise or the low-impedance PC input leads to some trouble in the guitars electronics.
I will see when the ordered USB connector arrives.

Any usb soundcard will be fine, and then you can insert a noise gate plugin. Which one is it?

Cool, that's a good entry level choice. You may also want to try Asio4all, it'll reduce latency just like the Behringer driver will, but with less cpu use. I'd try both.
