without changing the stereo balance? is there a (free) plugin available? i use reaper.

No. Changing the level of left or right by definition changes the balance.

The dual gain plug in Blue Cat's Gain Suite, which is free, may help.

You might want to try the Asymmetry or Rotation sliders on the Waves S1 stereo imager. Obviously not free, but sometimes on sale.

the chanmix2 plugin in reaper did the job.

In Reaper, there are some nice plugins by Loser & Stillwell, with "stereo" in their name, which are nice for this too.
