Joseph Hollo is probably the worlds greatest living sound designer, and he released a set of pads/horns/strings/etc for Spire that has since seen no competition. If you want one non-trance patch set, this is the one set you will want.

The Spire forum doesn't seem to get responses so maybe here would be a better place to discuss this.

I recently realized that oscillators can be used as modulation sources and destinations in the mod matrix, meaning that fm is possible between any oscs.

I did notice though that changing the parameters like pitch or waveshape of the source oscillator did not change the sound of the destination if the source osc mixer level was at 0 (but still not muted). Changing the oscillators parameters when it's used as a mod source only affects the destination if the oscillator's mixer value is above 0.

Just to clarify with an example, if you set osc 1 as mod source in the matrix and osc 2 pitch as destination, and then bring up the mod amount, now osc 1 is modulating osc 2. Have the volume of osc 2 up and osc 1 all the way down. You can clearly hear that osc2 is being modulated by osc 1 as it has a distinctive FM sound. But when you change the waveform shape or pitch of osc 1 it does not affect the sound. Now bring Osc 1 volume just above 0 and suddenly parameter changes in osc 1 do affect the sound of osc 2 as you'd expect. Note that osc 1 wasn't clicked "off" it was just at 0 volume which is what you'd normally do if you just want to use it as a modulation source.

IMO, this should not be the case - you don't always want to mix in an oscillator that is an fm source. It doesn't make a big difference if it's only raised to a value of 1, but seeing as oscillators have an off mode, it's strange that the modulator osc needs to be above 0 volume and I would suggest that the modulation should function the same regardless of whether the source is brought up in the mixer. I'm curious if this is intended for some reason.

The cool thing about Spire is that it can actually work as a 4 osc FM synth since the modulation matrix allows routing an osc to the parameters of another osc. So you can do frequency or phase modulation or modulate lots of other parameters by an oscillator. Actually plenty of other destinations can be modulated by an oscillator pitch as well, it's pretty darn flexible.

Hi,
just discovered this synth and going through the various demos..

I'm really interested in reproducing those Oxygene 2 sweeps/laser/bubbly sounds (for lack of better description)
I downloaded the demo, but could not find them.
Where they created with spire ? I would appreciate any guidance/help in reproducing them (a project file in logic would of course immensely appreciated)

The synth seems really nice, albeit a little cpu intensive. Going through the presets now.

Thanks! Playing with it now...From what I undertand this sound is achieved by modulating the pitch and cutoff of osc 1 (what type of waveform?) with LFO1, which rate is controlled by the ENV 3 of which modwheel controls the decay... am I missing anything else ? The modulations possibilities of Spire are immense...

Discount is appealing too...

Thanks again!

People apparently aren't interested in discussing how Spire actually works. I posted questions here and at the Reveal forum and nothing.

BTW, what ever happened to the summer lower cpu update?
