For those of you with Max for Live (and Push), this pretty cool polyrhthmic / polymetric sequencer + percussion synth was just released.

The sequencer and drum synth(s) are seperate modules too so you can drive whatever sounds you like with the sequencer.

I'm not too interested in the sequencer element, more the synthesis techniques used to blur between electronic and 'real' sounding drums. The demos sound fascinating - anyone purchased this yet? I guess I need M4L if I want to twiddle those interesting looking knobs.

Any real world opinions yet? Cant believe this thread is still empty..

I'm surprised by the lack of comments too, lol. Maybe there aren't a lot of people here that own M4L.

I actually purchased this and it's definitely as useful as I hoped it would be. I mainly bought it for the sequencer, though. What stands out is that it actually does proper polyrhythmic sequencing, e.g. one lane can be 5/4, while another can be 4/4, and they will fit the same bar.
A lot of the midi sequencer plugins I've tried only do polymetric (which Time & Timbre does as well), where you can adjust the looping length of a lane to get different meters but they all run at the same beat tempo and not made to fit a bar(s) - they just line up when they do over time.

There's another (free) M4L device that's similar - Polyrhythmus: http://www.maxforlive.com/library/devic ... hm-builder

The synth device(s) are definitely interesting as well. Yeah, you need to own M4L to purchase their packs.

I'm on the fence about it; Autobeat is also on offer and recently updated, and I dig a lot of the K-Devices stuff, so I'm torn between the two.

It does look very cool though, and suspect I'll end up picking it up....but I'm also thinking about getting Push as well during this 20% off season

LOL, yeah I'm pretty excited too! Good results so far...

The Push integration was key for me, and you can change pretty much every parameter from it.

Maybe the thread just feels more like crowd-sourcing for the holiday sales...

(The title intrigued me, but then I open the thread and thought, "oh, it's a commercial."

Seems to share some of the characteristics of Microtonic.

It has similarities, and enormous differences.

uTonic probably has a wider sonic palette given it's FM and subtractive abilities, but the sequencer is a lot simpler (it still has a place in my studio though)

Haha, really?? I have absolutely no relation with Ableton or Skinnerbox. I guess I can be a bit of a fanboy when I like something. Users creating posts when they catch wind of new plugins seems to be commonplace on this forum anyway...

Version 2 looks great! AFAIK nothing else out there can do this as easy?

OK I'll bite. I own T&T and I don't like it. The sound is weak, and the sequencer is nifty but, not nifty enough to keep me interested. Microtonic sounds MUCH BETTER, and uses far less CPU. Sure, Microtonic is twice the money but, you get what you pay for. Fxpansion's Tremor is another one I'd consider before T&T, even though it's a bit tougher on the CPU (sounds goddamned good!...very Nine Inch Nails-ish) Ephemere (Inear Display) doesn't have a sequencer but, sounds 10 times better. Xils' Stix is somewhat pricey but, is a damned good, efficient drum machine. If you are looking for a drum synth, there are better avenues. This is just my two cents. I'm not a huge fan of Max for Live anymore. It's just too likely to crash Live, or crush the ol' CPU...save for a couple of modulators, or sequencers. Hyakken makes some good M4L stuff, though. I'd recommend just about anything that guy does.

Back when I got this the main draw for me was always the sequencer component (Time). Nothing I could find did proper polyrythms at the time - it was all polymetric sequencing stuff out there. Now there's Xils-lab Stix which looks like a pretty amazing plugin. I agree the Timbre component doesn't shine compared to a lot of the other amazing drum synths / samplers out there.

Can you use time & timbre as a sequencer Only? To trigger a vst? Or is it its own instrument with samples? I'm confused now.

Post

I'm pretty sure you can use it with an Ableton drum rack. Not so sure about a VST though. It is a series of modules and you can use the sequencer section separately from the drum synth modules. It also integrates with Push. I'm thinking you could do the trick where T&T is on one Midi Track, and the VST is on another track set to receive Midi from T&T's track. I haven't tried it though. I'll try that this evening with Ephemere, and get back to you if no one responds sooner.
