Making a Podcast/Mashup in a DAW

How to do this, that and the other. Share, learn, teach. How did X do that? How can I sound like Y?

I recently started to make a podcast in Logic Pro 9, I mix the tracks together with the volume and equalizer automation.

Do I have to put anything on the master channel? In theory the tracks are already mastered and shouldn’t clip…

Is it advisable to make podcasts and mashups in a DAW?

Appreciate any tips and answers...

Thanks! :)

for mashup, just put a limiter on the master, and then if it sounds good then it's good. For Podcast i don't really know you should search some info on the web

There are as many ways to record and mix podcasts as there are podcasts. My podcast partner is remote and connected via Skype. I record him and me to separate channels, then I mix it in Logic. I do minimal processing to the remote channel, because Skype does a lot of processing automatically. I have to eq and compress my channel so it blends well with my partner's. Skype uses a lot of compression, so I have to match it on my end.

I finalize it (essentially mastering) in a manner similar to how I finalize a music track: a touch of EQ and glue compression, then a mastering limiter to bring the levels up to comparable podcasts - -18 to -16 dB RMS.

I do this all in Logic because I'm most comfortable there. I have templates for each step - recording, mixing, and mastering - since the sources rarely vary.

Okey thank you very much! :tu:

I’ve searched on the Internet and didn’t find anything, that’s why I tried here... If I put a limiter on the master channel the volume gets reduced in the transitions of the mix.

When I do my weekly radio show on FutureMusic FM, which I produce by myself, after I've chosen all the tracks I just run them all through RX4's Loudness function set to BS.1770-2/3 at -14dBfs. That leaves the quieter tracks alone for the most part, and lowers the volumes of the louder tracks so they all sound pretty much coherent when played back to back. Works a treat and saves me a lot of time! I have the vocal chain sorted so that it is pretty much perfect for dropping right in on top of that (SM7b into Chandler TG2 at 65dB gain, into DM Bax EQ, into ADC with Kotelnikov compressor). Saves a lot of manual faffing around with levels. I don't limit anything cos IME there's no need to be anywhere near 0dBfs for a podcast/radio show...

No probs, glad I could be helpful! Streaming and downloadable archives of my show are available below if anyone fancies a listen in. I'm still finding my voice, my feet, and my ideal settings etc.
