I'm interested in reproducing the kind of eerie synth pad sounds that Jaz Coleman used to use in the 80's on"Night Time" era Killing Joke songs like "Love Like Blood". I've got Sonicprojects OP-X Pro II and OBXD Virtual synths and I understand that both could be used to produce this kind of sound.

For anyone unfamiliar here is a clip of Love Like Blood https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnpwuRlXbhk&feature=kp

Has anybody got any tips on suitable patches that I could use as a starting point or what kind of settings I would need to tweak to get there? I'm a newbie when it comes to sound design!

Thanks very much :)

They used real ob-x for that song. Those old reconding are heavily processed with reverbs / compressors. So not exatcly the same but close.

Here is obxd patch:

Oh thanks, love (like blood!) this band!!! :-)

Oh that's great thank you :) - the closest I have heard to that sound. I will have a play around with the settings, compression and reverb as you've suggested

Can someone re-post that patch? DL link doesn't work anymore. I've been tinkering with it and can't get it close enough

Works here. On windows ... right click ... save as.

Ragnarok has a pretty good preset for that, it is even called killing joke for that reason

Ugliness, however, goes right the way through

:D

It took some time to get that close with Ragnarök, as it's architecture is pretty different from an Obie. But I am happy with the result myself 8) By the way, I did use some Youtube tutorial where they made that sound on a Oberheim, and translated that to Ragnarök ;)

I think as long as the tone is anywhere near, putting a slow LFO vibrato on it will get you where you want to be, maybe even just putting the slow vibrato on one oscillator with a shallow depth.

Isn't there anything that there is no YT video for? I had never even heard of Killing Joke 8)

I guess you know that joke: "If it exists, it's on Google. If it happened, it's on YouTube" :hihi:
