Best and worst DAWs?

Uhm, this is the key. A good DAW works with you. Allows you to record what you have in your head.No_Use wrote:Oh, so that's the key to Zimmer's success ?digitalboytn wrote: Hans Zimmer said that,"The best DAW is the one that you're used to.Whatever’s in your head, you’re supposed to be able to get it out and into your sequencer as quickly as you can."
That's pretty good advice I reckon
Good to know, I'll try.

I compose in a linear fashion.
I have been using Digital Performer for ten years now.
It works perfectly. I can do anything with it that I ever want or need to do.
I have never felt like I even needed to try anything else.

I kinda think "audio editor & mastering" DAW comparisons are more to the point, since they vary much more than sequencers.
Best = Wavelab 8.5
Worst = Soundforge anything
If I Won The Lottery = Pyramix

Like a wiseman once said (Me).
There is no better or worse DAW since it is only in the eye of the beholder.
Only when you have tried them all you will see the path you are about to take and where it might lead you.
There will be many surprises in your journey but don't be afraid and embrace the options that are given to you and only then you will find your true host.
Hope this helped you
Now good luck on your journey Katelyn

yup. Whatever someone's workflow demands, there's a daw to answer. Better or worse? That depends entirely on what you want to do...and whether you actually have to accomplish anything at all.RockinMillie wrote:The best DAW is the one that engages you enough to get on with making music rather than writing about it in forums
Seriously, what you will get in response to your question is subjective opinion and subjective opinion presented as fact. Some people like to get on and do their music, some like to fiddle around with the software.
and that even comes down to specific task. some are just not as good at some stuff as others are.What is 'best' for one person is not necessarily the best for all.
bingo. my favorite isn't one as popular around these parts as would be...i've used plenty of those available, and have liked them all for various reasons. at the end of the day, though...what do you get stuff done in? that's the real question to answer here....A DAW that suits your workflow will pay dividends in terms of assisting your creativity in the long run.

Having been a long time Cubase user (LONG TIME).
I got to the point several times to jump ship.
This was mostly due to the layout changes that just made the work flow slower.
NOW, with the release of Cubase 8 I gotta say - BEST.
Finally, a layout that works and is efficient.
I like to work fast, on C8 that is finally possible.
Big thumbs up!
Worst?
Who cares....

Unfortunately, that will depend on what you are doing. For mixing, C8 is still far slower to use than 6.5. Not even close. Until they fix the mixer focus and hover stupidity it will never quite work for mixing from an "efficiency" standpoint.PatchAdamz wrote:NOW, with the release of Cubase 8 I gotta say - BEST.

Hardly a pearl of wisdom though is it - shouldn't that be obvious to everyone?digitalboytn wrote:Hans Zimmer said that,"The best DAW is the one that you're used to.Whatever’s in your head, you’re supposed to be able to get it out and into your sequencer as quickly as you can."

...or a chronic noodler. The requirement to actually finish work tends to supplant "what's the brightest and shiniest thing that'll keep me rapt until something brighter and shinier comes along (probably within the next 5 minutes or so)?" with a somewhat more pragmatic attitude. I ended up purging quite a bit of accumulated stuff, because deadlines turned out to be a pretty brilliant acid test.
Anyway, both are a grand time. Highly recommend. Carry on.
