hi, I have a recording of a bunch of drums I banged on, it's 1 long audio file. I want to cut them up and load them into either kontact or battery (latest versions of both). I have always done this in EXS24, but figured since I have the NI stuff, I should learn how to do it there.

not sure where to look though for instructions/tutorials. didn't find it in the manual, and when I search youtube I only find some really half baked tutorials. I would like the cuts to be clean as possible. any ideas on tutorials or where i can learn? thanks in advance, your help is ALWAYS appreciated.

...Battery doesn't do slicing, so you'd have to use Kontakt. Check ch. 17.6 of your manual for slicing. If it's a really long file it might worth considering using sections of 4,8 or 16 bars and save them as individual instruments and then do the slicing. Depending on the length of your file you might get too many slices for just one Kontakt instrument...

checking this thread from work. thanks for your answer. they're one shots and I want to use about 30 of them, so I will try your suggestions.

Kontakt can do slicing, but can it export the individual slices? Don't know... I don't use sample editing (particularly slicing) in Kontakt except for simple adjustments, a loop point here or there.

For what you're talking about I'll usually use a dedicated audio editor or DAW to prep samples. Back in the day I used to use a freebie called "WaveKnife", but that thing is ancient now, and it only supports 16-bit audio anyway... Set a dB threshold and chop a WAV into a bunch of little WAVs. Turns out Reaper has such a tool -- it's called "Auto Trim/Slice". You can see it in action here, starting around 9:00 mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pw9hv13cHNk

Reaper is actually incredible useful as a general editor for multisample prepping... e.g., you can use the batch processor to apply FX to an entire set of WAV files, etc.
You need to limit that rez, bro.

good point. i would want to be able to export them as you never know what you'll what to use them in down the road. i think i'll do it in Kontakt just so I can learn it, but it may be easier to just knock it out in Logic.

...Kontakt's slicing engine can slice via an adjustable transient detection, but I think, you can't export the slice as individual files. Saving the Kontakt instrument will probably save the large original file rather than the individual slices (unless you make copies of the original file's group in Kontakt and truncate the respective slices in these groups) - but I could be wrong about that. Since you just want to use a couple of hits, it might be faster doing this in Logic. I don't use it, but I guess, these links might be helpful...

if Logic doesn't export the individual slices either, you could copy the files to different audio tracks, truncate the desired slices and export the tracks...

...or you could buy Propellheads Recycle, which is still king!! :D

Yep, Kontakt doesn't export individual slices. Use Reaper - works like a charm for slicing stuff up into samples!

well, they had Intakt. Was almost perfect. Then they discontinued it. I still use it. You should be able to do it in Kontakt, but the workflow is horrible.

I also use Beatcreator. It has SFZ and MIDI Export (can be imported into Kontakt, but it works only in Kontakt3 for me, Kontakt 4 and 5 refuse to read correctly). Strange enough: the product also disappeared meanwhile ...
