Folks -- we've been working with the development teams at Audeonic Apps and MIDI Designer, and have just released Music IO. It's an app that routes MIDI over USB between an iOS device and a Mac. Latency is very low (on the order of 1ms in my tests), and all you need is a standard lightning/30-pin sync cable. We've got audio running in the development versions, and should be releasing that as a free update in a couple of weeks (still tweaking the UI on this a little bit).
I'm really pleased with how the app turned out, and it was great working with a couple of really talented developers. We've got a bunch more stuff planned. Details on the app are at http://www.musicioapp.com, or you can ping me if you've got questions!

Congratulations!....finally its been done for OSX/iOS without the need for CCK/midi hardware/adaptors and soon no need for an audio interface if you so choose...absolutely rocks with midi plus looking forward to audio and the rest of the options/features when they come...Top kick!
