I wonder if early CD masters didn't take the RIAA curve into account or somesuch. Would account for the overly trebly sound if RIAA equalised masters were pressed straight to disc.
edit: Same deal if using masters intended for cassette that have been processed with Dolby B pre-emphasis, come to think of it.
