The idea of a modular system that you can assemble/configure yourself is great, you just need someone to actually build all the modules/components and the system itself first!

It turns out that on the inside many DAWs already work this way. Only the source-code isn't yours to play with.

So perhaps an open-source DAW is the answer? Only problem being of course you still need to be a programmer and spend several days just to get the project configured correctly to compile. Perhaps several weeks to understand enough about the project to edit anything and who knows how long the edit/debugging/commit itself may take.

The complexity of this stuff might be mind-boggling to most even when you're dealing with a very well constructed code-base. Most aren't.

Hollyhock is the perfect candidate, as you said twice allready; hum. And Hollyhock 2 seems to be even morer perfecter, hum hum.
Max, PD, CSound, supercollider, IntegraLive for PD,MuLab, etc etc etc...
