Or what did it initially sound like before distortion? Is it a normal 808 sine kick with a specific waveshaper? Or is it possible to create a waveform like this with normal (clip) distortion, by adding specific frequencies with a synthesizer?

If to guess - it sounds like an attack of synth sound and then apply short delay with high repeat count.
It gives the exact ambient feel like a delay does. Like in an oil barrel, kind of.
In plugins like Izotope Trash you have a large number of box models - and you can do neat things with those to a sound too.

Camel Phat will be the Vst, its an 808 Kick, find the preset its either on Camel Phat or Camel Crusher.
