i have the mkII - and... i got depressed! by the amazing factory presets...
enough to put you off trying to program drum machines, what's the point,
if it has all been done, haha..

so i mashed away at it for a bit, full on...and then found that by holding it
back - a lot - you can get more subtle results from it, and make it sound
much more analogue - the nice touch is how sounds change with each
pattern, and having sh*tloads of user memories (4x64).
but what a shame no aux stereo out...

i got a ES1 mkII and liked that more, in spite of lack of 'decay' parameter
(stupid korg decision there... or the er1 would be deader-than-dead).
SO GET A mkII ES1 now! you will love it. sounds ace with a 808 kit and some
reverb fx etc. (ah: ES1 or Volca Sample? so similar..)

word up, i just ordered a es1 on ebay, should arrive soon :)

hehe.

tip: if you want smartmedia cards (you'll want the 64mb ones mainly,
eg: if max kit size is 4 mb, you could get 16 kits on - except it'll only
recognize kits 0-9) so go looking for crappy old digital cameras being
sold for 15quid with a couple of SM cards.

the other thing you'll want for it is Smart Renamer - a dumb name for
the 'Korg ES1 Smart Renamer' - it is a file renamer and kit librarian for
the ES1. and you'll also find 70+ drum machines done as kits online on
the yahoo usergroup - most of the other software up there looks like a
waste of time, so just go for that one -haven't actually used it, too much
stuff downloaded and dumped to external...

(although you might try the HR16 for the same type of programming
eg:copy+paste, sticking patterns together. you get more functions,
but less soundmashing. very quick workflow though.)
