Bidule seems like the next best thing for plugging in that hole.
Yeah, Bidule + Reaper is pretty much where I've settled.

I tend to oscillate back and forth on that issue without ever converging on what's more important to my style. Of course, there's never going to be a perfect answer... I'm sure many people on kvr struggle with the same question.
Yeah, if I had infinite time, I'd learn it all. :)

Regarding Bidule...does the VST version use less CPU than the standalone? I like its features but running standalone in XP I get 15-20% CPU usage on stone-simple VSTs like Synth1 and MiniMogue, which might register 2-5% in my other hosts (Reaper, EnergyXT, ReNoise, AudioMulch).

VAZ Modular is a VST (and standalone) synth that hosts VSTs.

Strange... I don't have the same problem here (also on XP). I've got a simple project open here which idles at just above 6%, I can play 16 voices of Synth1 (1st patch of default bank, "Synth1 brastring") and it doesn't go much above 9%. I've also noticed slightly better performance on my system in Bidule than EnergyXT - no scientific measurement done or anything, but just in terms of plug-ins I can load in a live session before I notice problems.

That said, the VST and standalone versions of Bidule seem to perform the same as far as hosting VST's for me. By itself (that is, loaded as a plug-in, but "blank") it uses next to nothing here.

Hey, thanks for the info!
My computer is ancient (8 years old) and getting a little fussy.
Think I'll spring for Bidule when I get a laptop.

amazing free, modular multipluginformat (vst/psycle/ladspa/mfx/buzz/vamp) host, with a tracker and scripting interface:

Buze : http://batman.no/buze

Have been using it for years now, and after i switched to linux it runs fine with wine. I just press the sync button to use it with renoise nowadays (easy way to run all my windows plugins within linux hasslefree)

The creator is very kind and helpfull, just join #buze on EFNET irc

could not find "free" anywhere.

Supports VST means that it can host VST. Apparently it is a standalone or can run as a VST or VSTi in a VST host.

I have Bidule. Is there any advantage to looking into Buze?

It bother me that Bidule does not have a 32 to 64 bit bridge for the VST effects and instruments. Furthermore it only has one path to all the VST's. Those are my gripes.

Yes I would love to have the power of Bidule and eat my cake at the same time. I would love to find an alternative with frosting and a cherry on top.

I was a bit confused about Buzz and Buze so did a bit
of research.

Buzz

I see it is only a stand-alone. So this is ruled out by me

Buze

Apparently this is also a stand-alone and not a VST or VSTi.
