'Taiko' was done with the same recording specifications as World Percussion 2.0. So in other words you can go nice and close or big and roomy depending on your needs. I'm personally a big fan of the roomy sound

I'm spoiled by having performed in a taiko group for a couple of years. No sample library will ever sound convincing to me. At best, good enough for cinematic stuff if drowned in reverb.

Close miking them always sounds especially weird, IMHO. They don't sound like that in person, even playing outdoors in a muddy grassy field with minimal reflections. Microphones lie

Recording taikos are definitely a fine art. The last demo I posted is of a solo wine barrel taiko... this is not a traditional taiko and obviously sounds very different due to its make up (our library contains tradition taikos). The taikos can go as dry or roomy as you want (all with real reverb... not artificial). Microphones are used to capture a sonic moment in time, and they have no need to lie we passionately feel what we have captured is a true representation of these instruments recorded in a world class scoring stage... and the positive feedback from a number of A-list composers has been overwhelming
