I unsuccessfully tried to drag and drop and audio clip from a Tracktion edit into Machfive 3 loaded into a track as a VSTi. Is there a way of doing this or isn't it possible?

It might be worth bearing in mind that a clip in an edit might not necessarily sound the same as you are hearing it, for many possible reasons.
If you want to put the clip as you hear it into the sampler, you might consider rendering it to a file and loading the file into the sampler. That allows all the clip's processing - cropping (or whatever the music term is), stretching, effects, etc - to be applied.
I don't know if dragging from an edit track in the way you'd like is possible. If you render it, however, the rendered version could be dragged into Machfive 3 from a file browser (though I don't know if the T6 browser allows dragging onto a sampler plug-in).
