Is the desktop daw heading towards the app market?

as far as I have seen.. the ios app store wipes it's ass with the android stuff. For Now.

both windows and mac are going to have to up the game quite a bit to make people switch from a desktop to a tablet based system. I see it happening. not sure when.. much larger tablets with way better connectivity.. at least for the ipad. the ipad needs to run osx.

using a ipad to control your daw with stuff like lemur is incredible. can't wait to see what else comes in the future.

some aspects of these newer ipad type tochable daw like daws are a million times more intuitive than current desktop daws. seriously. once you can plug in a usb and load hundreds of gigs of sample libraries and do everything you can do now on a desktop but better and more intuitive.. it will be amazing. this is new stuff and exciting. building from the ground up. ios features are so much more intuitive. I just wish they would go All the way with it! sooner than later.

Try the sampler and touchable instrument functions in garage band on the ipad..and see the tip of the iceberg. and notice all the things that are missing. then imagine all of those things being there.

the people porting their desktop daws as crippled versions are REALLY missing the point here. The ones who rethink how everything is laid out with touchable functions are going to be amazing. the ones who simply port a copy of the desktop daw are going to be mediocre. especially if they are crippled versions of the Same concept as far as intuitive functions go.

using the ipad or other tablets is Brilliant for Controlling stuff. the next step is how will they take it to the next level so those who want.. can run a whole daw setup that compares to the current desktop systems are far as functions. the productivity will be big. for those into that sorta thing.

Pretty much. Look, touch is great, portability is great, I'm not suggesting that tablets aren't useful in the studio. I just don't think that they are the second coming and I don't think that limited OS variants are a replacement for studio machines.

I use my ipad a lot for much simpler things that really leverage its portability, e.g., for lyrics. In fact, my only iK multimedia product is their little mic stand ipad clamp.

BTW: With respect to an earlier question, yes, I do use garage band on the ipad and I think that it fits really well in terms of product balance. It's not a full fledged DAW and it has features that leverage touch well. I don't bother with boat loads of effects, it's just a scratchpad tool. I use it with my blue snowflake which compliments the ipad in terms of portability while significantly improving on the sound quality of the built in microphone. It's rare that anything I do with garage band has more than about four tracks. Which, to me, sort of puts it in the right perspective. The ipad is a great replacement for the four track porta-studio of days gone by.

On the other hand, touch as a performance interface is overrated, IMNSHO. I still prefer tactile interfaces like Push, Machine, or traditional controllers. It's very hard to play the ipad quickly and aggressively.

I replaced my guitars with an iPad. It's so convenient to have all the different guitars in just one. No cumbersome switching and plugging cables etc. I also use it as a piano.. and drums. The feel is just great and i can have several different instruments in one. I could never multitouch my guitar like this. It's so intuitive.

I nearly totally swith to an ipad + keyboard midi controller set up, I have no real audio recording needs, nor professional needs too, it's just an hobby, I just want to compose, mix and bounce what I do, and clearly it's already possible with pros and cons obviously.

The think what drives the iOS dominance is the content.

It's definitely an important part of the reason, but it's also the quality of the hardware. All iOS devices coming from one manufacturer limits openness, but it also leads to standardized hardware that offers the same level of quality.

I'm not sure if that is overall correct.

I don't know much about windows tablets. But as a developer, I've tested many Android devices, and at the end, the only "really and always" working devices are Google's own Nexus line (if you want to run at max performance, which you should for audio applications).

People who buy an IPad do not waste a single second to think about another hw manufacturer, of course not, because there is none. They go to the apple store and by a hardware device built by apple and running on software, also built by apple. Of course, that's the one and only right decision.

People who buy an Android tablet start considering devices of many manufacturers (why? because they exist). But that's the biggest mistake. Why don't buy a hardware device built by Google and running on software, also built by Google. Google Nexus devices are the one and only quality standard in the Android world, those run on stock Android without any fancy manufacturer bloatware, and the operating system is optimized exactly for these devices.

Hardware Fragmentation in the Android world is both a blessing and a curse. It brought a lot of users, but also a lot of problems.
