hi everybody,
i want to buy the drop by cytomic but before, i ask to you if you use it, on every synth and/ or how you use it, for final filtering, sidechain, for fm capacity or just in replacement of your synths filter, i have demo it, and i really enjoy using it but, it s not free, it cost cpu too and i don t know if i will use it in my today productions...
thanks in advance

I don't use it as a synth's filter although I suppose you could. I use it rather as an effect or bus when I want filtering capabilities.

While you could use it for a synth filter, IMO with oversampling, (which I use because I don't record at 44.1) it's too CPU intensive to do that for all the synths one could potentially have running.

No, not everything. I used the Prodigy filter for getting a Moog bass a while back (not as much call for that as I'm playing bass guitar on most things these days, though it's even good for adding a bit of grit/drive to bass guitar). Sometimes use it for a touch of saturation/sweetening or swirly filter effects on pads. But often if I'm using some glossy/ethereal patch from NI Massive or the like, some sounds I'd rather keep more pristine. Not everything needs to be made to sound more analog-esque.

Not sure how you can replace synths' filters if they need to work in pair with a filter envelope....

Ah, okay, mistake... :tu:

You can't. Synthesizers enveloppes are retrigered with each note note on, and in a polyphonic way, including the filters EVs. At best you can make mono lines.

Then this thread would probably be in a better place in the effect forum.

And finally I dont use The Drop because I use another filter plug in, with at least a similar quality filter wise, but much more sophisticated ( or different at least ) modulations features ( Xils-Lab Ramses ). Yet, I might get The Drop at one point in the future to compliment Ramses because the filters flavors are somewhat different.

Why not get a synth with very good filters in the first place? Ideally two filters you can combine as you please...

I've used it on a monophonic line as filter before - it has midi input so you can totally use it as a monophonic synth module expansion for a synth - in this case I used it on a chiptune synth that didn't come with a filter.

Mostly I either use it for analog warmth (subtle distortion and high end attenuation) or for sampling through (play drum, synth, whatever part, tweak knobs like crazy while recording, then cut out the best bits). Another good use is if you just want a simple LFO synth on a part. Use low quality for composing and then render with maximum oversampling.

oddly enough , i seem to get by w/o using it at all ...

Another subtle but good use: set the envelope follower to move the filters, give a good amount of resonance, then mix it in like 10% wet and 90% dry. Just adds some analog kinda dimension to your sound. And if your sound already has filters and volume dynamics, you can get some crazy stuff but it's just out of ear's reach in the background. Make the listeners reach in!

Lol...why would i use a Filter Effect on a synth...of course for some Effect...probably once in 20 years.

For someone who doesnt work for them and doesnt have time to represent them anymore, he sure seems to be making a big voluntary effort

Same here... each to his own tho.

Just because another filter plugin offers a ladder filter model or an SH filter model or whatever doesn't mean they're interchangeable or of the same quality. Honestly, I've yet to hear a Moog filter simulation from anything else produce quite the same results as the Prodigy one in The Drop.

Andy did some lengthy A/B vids where he didn't just compare static pre-optimized sounds, but started tweaking the real thing and its counterpart in The Drop in realtime. Their behaviors were impressively similar throughout the demo. I don't think very many other plugins would fare as well with that kind of less forgiving comparison.
