New wavetable for doing choral sounds, but also organ and strings:
https://app.box.com/s/ay8gc3ej069uvxy57jn4nmhtjghvopgv
What I've done here is to stick a word in to a text-to-speech synthesizer that can be accessed from within Mathematica and extracted as many unique waveforms from that as I could be bothered to do, resampled them and exported to DUNE2 wt format.
Here is what it can sound like:

Mark, Mathematica is a bit pricey and has more features than I need for what we're doing. Is there something out there that has the basic functions that you used for this particular application that's a little bit more budget conscious, even if that's the only thing it does or is Mathematica pretty much the only option?cytospur wrote:New wavetable for doing choral sounds, but also organ and strings:

Right now, I'm making my wave tables through hand draw and a lot of trial and error. Text to speech or even something that will convert spoken word (I do own a high quality mic) will do fine.
Anything you can recommend?

Raspberry Pi 2 running Noobs comes with Mathematica 10 for free. The computer itself costs peanuts and you "just" need a HD TV to plug in to. The Rasp Pi 2 is more than powerful enough to run Mathematica for these kinds of applications. Having said that, it is still a bit far to go for one specific task
I would use Audacity or Wavosaur to edit out your single cycles. Make sure you trim at zero-crossing points and save the single cycles. I'm assuming at this point you can import in to Audioterm and convert, although I haven't used that.
Also, just beacause there are 64 slots possible in DUNE2's wavetables, they don't need to be filled, two is enough to still sound great.
BTW, I'm happy to convert batches of single cycles for you using my system if you wish.

Mark, you are an absolute gem. We need more people like you here.cytospur wrote:Raspberry Pi 2 running Noobs comes with Mathematica 10 for free. I think I'll be fine with what I have. Yes, Audio Term works fine and seems to be able to handle what I've thrown at it so far. The wave draw in it is kind of klunky, but it'll do.
Mostly what I do is take several synths, layer them, and then record them, staggering the waves over time so that they overlap and also crossfade naturally. It takes some fancy playing but I've come up with some unusual textures especially combining things like Omnisphere, Zebra 2 and an old HG synth. I haven't actually converted any of them to Dune 2 format yet but I'm planning to shortly.

Volca Keys wavetable based on each of the six oscillator settings:

With a short demo here. All sounds, except drums, are the Volca Keys wavetable.

This has turned in to a full (WIP) track. All sounds (apart from drums) use the Korg Volca Keys wavetable linked just above.

This is great stuff, all really extending Dune 2 sonically. I especially liked your Choir sounds. I kind of got close using Bpf filters set to high resonance to simulate vocal formants, but this method is a lot closer to what I wanted to achieve. Appropos using these wavetables for my own presets, does your offer of allowing Sound Designers to use them freely for their own commercial releases still stand? I've got a set I intend to release in the next couple of days that uses the wavetables that come with the factory presets, but I am already starting to work on some new material for this synth that features your astounding wavetables. I of course will give anything I release with these to you gratis, for free.cytospur wrote:This has turned in to a full (WIP) track. Also, would you be interested in creating particular wavetable sets to order? Maybe we could work out some kind of trade as far this concerned? There are a number of sounds that I would like to see as wavetables, particularly vocal, formant, vosim type sounds (it would be great to have something that emulates a yoy type bass sound without using a bitcrusher or formant filter for example) , struck metal and metallophone sounds, horn and woodwind sounds, as well as sounds that travel from inharmonic to harmonic and vice versa or maybe have an interval like a fifth that can be scanned to a fourth or other interval.
Just putting some ideas out there. I'm sure you've plenty of your own and I for one will look out for them.

Cool stuff. Sounds like a Mellotron pumped full of Helium. I've been listening to a lot of Cloud Rap lately and these sort of sounds would work perfectly in that context.Tjivory wrote:Made with Dune 2 from Mark's Speech Wavetable with 4 instances.
