Hey everyone! Got a quick question. I'm looking for a good vst bass guitar, one that if I put a little distortion on it, it doesn't end up sounding like trash. I've got NI Rickenbacker Bass and Prominy's SR5 Rock Bass and when I add distortion to either of them, they just sound like garbage. The music I write is like 80's thrash metal, if that helps. Any advice would be much appreciated! :hyper: :hyper: :help:

Well it's not the basses, both of those can sound great with distortion. When you say you're adding distortion, are you talking about an amp sim, or just straight dirt?

I have many (probably far too many) options for adding dirt to any of my bass guitar tracks, I useually tend to go for the one's which allow only a certain bandwidth of the signal to be driven/distorted or the low-end turns to indistinct mush, So as b15fliptop says how are you distorting your virtual bass guitar tracks? Not that there is a right or wrong way to go about it but simply some you'll find work best for your own needs whilst others the opposite.

Here are a some that I use often FWIW:

There are plenty more but I think you'll get the overall gist. The key for me personally is having the dirt focused in the mid-range with the lows and highs rather clean

YMMV, Hope it of some use though anyway, All the best :)

Have you tried doing just this? In your DAW, copy your track, and bleed off the highs and lows on your copy, put through your distortion/amp sim of choice, and mix back in so that you can just barely hear the distortion. Should be good to go.

I played around with my amp sims and I found a sound that I sort of like, guess I'll go with that. Thanks for the help.

Yes indeed that is an ideal way to take advantage of the options available to us these days, Here is a track from an EP of mine last year where I wrote with the bass guitar playing as much of a role leading as I'd normally use a guitar for pretty much, To get the mix right took me awhile because the bass had to keep it authority in the low-end whilst still having quality properties of a leading voice, I eventually got it to this point which I'm fairly satsified with using the exact method you mention https://app.box.com/s/7ncuzpjr6ous97nrqd5qg2llhchk3qip

Nice one Scott (isn't it?), I've not posted much here for awhile but I do remember your good self from the 'your next guitar' thread :)

All the best and to all as always :tu:

Yeah, thats what I do with all of my songs. I have 2 bass guitar tracks, one clean, one distorted and try to mix them together as well as possible. I realized, it wasn't the vst bass instrument I was using that was the problem, it was the amp sim I was using, it just sounded like garbage, so I switched it up and used a different one and the results aren't too bad. You can check out my work in the 'virtual metal band' thread on this forum. Or I can just post the link here, if you guys would like?

Valimesh I would enjoy taking a listen so yeah please do post some linkage, I personally track all my guitar, bass guitar and if applicable vocals myself since I've been playing for a long time but I'm an awful drummer, So I use virtual instruments when it just my own one man band shit.

However I am not snobby about it and don't mind if it is played by a human or programmed in, As it's still all about the riffs for me and I simply get enjoyment from listening as much as playing :tu:

I will have to look for the 'virtual metal band' thread you mention as I'm a metal lifer, So am never not interested in hearing new stuff/other people's work

Obviously I can only speak for myself but I doubt the OP would mind or other members

Nice one/Cheers \m/

I use D16 Devastor on Bass Guitars. There are 2 specific presets that do miracles on every bass sound!

Also the tech 21 vt bass pre amp

David ellefson bundle for revalver4.
Check out scarbee rickenbaker internal presets.
You may want to cut back on the pick attack of the scarbee rick for playing thrash.

Thanks for all the info, guys! Here's my stuff. When I did the first album, Implements of War, I didn't know much at all about post production, while I'm still no expert, the 2nd album, Plague of the Beast, sounds MILES better, I think.

Cheers Valimesh, Followed you and am going to listen to both in their entirety (tonight when my son and daughter are asleep and I won't get distracted), I'm loving the front cover artwork and from intial impressions the vocals are spot on for type of thrash I grew up on and love equally to this day, I really hope you don't mind me saying you seem to have that late 80's sound down very well :tu:
