This, however, is not just the case with Eurovision songs. This has been the case with a large portion of the chart songs for decades, at least in my humble opionion... which might seem a bit radical to some.seismic1 wrote: The songs were almost without exception, dire and dreadful, with no memorable hooks.
Who's going to remember the ESC 2015 winning song in 10 years from now? Probably nobody...
Who's going to remember a Britney Spears song in 10 years from now? Probably nobody...
Who's going to remember a song like "We are the champions" in 50 years from now? Probably most people listening to music...
By tendency (i. e. this concerns a large number of the songs), modern charts have become a collection of uninspired, dull, and weak songs created by people who don't seem to be able to write larger-than-life tunes. The common practice to use more and more electronic gimmicks and gadgets in songs has even contributed to this tendency, if you ask me.
If a fully produced song is really good, it's also good with a guitar (or piano) and a voice only. If a song only sounds good when it's pimped up to the max with electronic gimmicks, it's usually not good when stripped down to the basics.
Let's take an example: Take "Scream & shout" by Britney Spears and Will.I.Am and try to perform it with just a guitar and a singer. After trying that, you will be precisely able to characterize the "quality" of this song. Doing so shouldn't take more than four letters, the first of them being an "s".

The thing is, only the good stuff of any period tends to stick, creating the illusion of cultural output having been better in the past than today where you're constantly exposed to the whole gamut of music from utter drivel to works of genius... I forget what the effect is called but it's on Cracked somewhere (isn't everything??)
Just to be contrary, I think Britney's 'Oops I Did It Again' can definitely hold its own 15 years on – I'm pretty sure it would pass the guitar+vocal acid test with flying colours too.
That said, ESC 2015 was unusually full of forgettable shlock :/

Yes, we'll remember how obnoxious it was.Skorpius wrote: Who's going to remember a song like "We are the champions" in 50 years from now? Probably most people listening to music...
A Eurovision highpoint - Telex's 1980 analog synthy song about Eurovision. It was kind of a joke. They were hoping to come in last.

I only finished watching ESC 2015 an hour ago. I can't remember any of the songs, and I don't think it's my memory which is at fault.

Don't care much about it, never did, but then yesterday I heard that Australia entered. If that's how it works, the Islamic State should enter, too. They love attention-grabbing stunts that will get reported in the media, after all.

Even Plastic Bertrand caved in and competed for Luxembourg. It is only funny when they actually try to win

Plastic Bertrand is perfect for Eurovision. In his early days, he was not a punk but a Milli Vanilla-type fake performer:Numanoid wrote: Even Plastic Bertrand caved in and competed for Luxembourg.

Belgian pop star Plastic Bertrand confessed Wednesday he did not sing his 1977 hit record "Ca Plane Pour Moi" -- nor any of the songs on his first four albums.
