Why did you post in this 5 year old thread only to link to another 5 year old thread? 8)
I am not against posting in old threads, I just fail to see the purpose in this case :)

Anyway, Nightflight is a cheap yet good option for string machines.

I like to make my strings in Sylenth, though :)

Really? I owned LASS at one point, but getting Hollywood Strings Gold later had me regretting the purchase. From a sound perspective, Hollywood Strings owns all others imo; I've never heard better, and I've tried the other, usual suspects.

However, from what I recall LASS is one heck of a lot easier on the ole CPU. East West takes a very aggravating hit in CPU, and I'm first to admit that it can be very fiddly as far as tempo sync'ing at times.

It's worth it for the sound...just barely.

for the consideration of "string machine" fans, give my "float" a go -

"strings" start after ~ 0.50
http://xoxos.net/vst/mp3/float.mp3

it's a ~"bi-layer" stereo "pitched noise" oscillator, secret design, i guarantee unduplicated :) osc sits between noise and periodicity so useful for ensemble, unison and string timbres.

Some of us are nocturnal species so should be OK

I lust for Virtual String Machine, but should have enough String Machine plugs too not really need it

But I want it, maybe because John Foxx endorses it?

For freeware string machines, there's always the Mark Twos:

Also, xoxos' float is just generally snazzlicious.

To the starter of this thread. I doubt you're gonna find the 'best' string with this approach for 2 reasons. 1. it purely subjective and 2. Most people would only try one and leave it at that. I doubt an EW user will go NI simply to try something new. Most would just stick to the 1st brand they come upon mostly because of expense..why pay another $400 to get the same sound from a different brand? You'd get a decent comparison with synths per user but not strings and everyone's just gonna hype up the one they use anyway to justify using it. These guys saying EW or Session strings is the shit, probably haven't tried anything else, in other words.

I read the thread and I still didn't get it. The subject is "String Synths", which, for me, would mean something like Eminent and Solina emulations. Then he starts talking about orchestral string sample based libraries. Those are not "string synths", IMO, but rather ochestral string libraries. Apples and oranges.

So, what are we aiming to: Sampled orchestral string libraries, or string synths?

Virtual String Machine as Rack Extension, only $39 at intro.

Seems like a no brainer for the Reason user

2:20 for "the deal with string synths" (if you are too young to remember the 70s)
