Just wanted to chip in and say that

(A) should I be surprised at the number of bass players here on KVR (myself being another one)?

(B) while I honestly often find myself intimidated at the level of skill displayed by many participants in the OSC (entries that appear two days after the latest OSC is announced, using 104 instances of the synth, sounding quite polished, and having a mention in their notes to the effect of taking 4 hours from start to finish, etc.)- that still doesn't stop me from at least having a go at it; more often than not, I don't have an entry finished in time, as I've spent far too long getting familiar with the synth and mucking about with sound-design-wankery, rather than actually considering such things as composition, arrangement and so on.
Yet even with many forlorn abandoned OSC projects littering my drive, and the massive swell of indifference that my actual completed entries have generated, the steady (if very slow) increase in my overall skills is worth it; I've learned how to better utilize the effects within my DAW, how to (relatively) quickly create basic percussive elements, how to better give tracks separate space and punch within a mix, (and for me in particular) how to accomplish all my goals within a project without rendering to audio ASAP, etc.
OSC always keeps me humble, so while I may be yet another crusty old codger who doesn't understand why supersaws are such an enormous preoccupation with so many, or is made heavily weary by people who think that listening to disparate subgenres of EDM constitutes "eclectic taste in music", I'm not so far up me own bum that I can't or won't learn something from those that know what they're doing. This is KVR, after all ;)
Music can no longer soothe the worried thoughts of monarchs; it can only tell you when it's time to buy margarine or copulate. -xoxos

... meaning someone with skills is playing it save. A little boring in the long run. Don't you think so? No risk no fun!

Have a nice day, guys.

It has potential but right now too much doesn't work including the mod wheel which is an absolute must have. We'll wait and see how the bug fixes are coming.

Agreed. The developer is very determined, and motivated, so it should mature soon. I had some very critical flaws when running it, like inability to save patches to the project.

Yes, +1 !! But only if it works quite solid please...

I would like to (re-)suggest TAL noisemaker, again! It's cross-platform, sounds awesome and has a lot of fun capabilities.

I am terribly sorry to hijack this thread again, but I am currently lost as to whether or not we (the KVR Mix Challenge staff) ever made another shout out to the OSC (thanks bjporter for the Twitter retweets btw).

Why? Because OSC regular bzur offered a track for the current Mix Challenge (MC12), and the submission deadline for this runs out in 14 hours.

http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... 2&t=441589

So if you're a regular on both challenges, just a quick reminder of the 21-07-2015 11:59pm PDT deadline.

Thanks.

Cool thanks for the heads up :tu: bzur's stuff is so cool :phones: :phones: :phones:

Just a short heads up for those that jump between KVR songwriting and mixing challenges.

Late adopters get a final(!) chance to work on the submitted track by bzur. I just updated the KVR Mix Challenge thread with a 48 hour extension to submit your mix. The more participants, the more interesting the challenge.

Thanks again for the OSC regulars to provide tracks for us to mix.

This makes me confused:

"More Clarification: Audio must not be touched at all once it leaves the DAW (aka after bouncing a track or a stem). For example: One cannot master the audio in another software or service. Also, If you need more performance / CPU a workaround is to freeze all the tracks."

So it's okay to freeze tracks but basically freezing the mix (rendering and opening the wave file) to get some cpu performance back is off limits? If we make a track in Bitwig and render the track and open this in Bitwig for mastering, it sounds identical compared to the situation where I master on the mix realtime. There is NO audible advantage, but there is a big cpu benefit for those who have no powerful DAW for example. Also, we like to commit a mix so during mastering you have full focus on the task at hand. If we like to work like that, why stop us from doing that? All those (weird) rules sometimes makes it less fun. If there is no fun, why would we bother joining?

This phrasing should have been there before, but was never clarified until 2014. It is the spirit of the OSC: Basically, get the synth, get some fx, and make a fun track, without samples. Polishing the track, or mastering was never really the main focus. By that logic, the mastering bounce was always considered a "sample" by V'ger (and hence technically illegal even if same result). The other facet is the ability for a mod to check the project fairly easily.

Irion says it quite well here (http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... g#p5350709)
IrionDaRonin wrote:I think people vote more for musical/feeling stuff (which is my case) and what can be done with the synth itself, than mastering stuff, which after all, it has nothing to do with the OSC spirit.
Is it time to revisit this? Anyone else have thoughts on this rule?

Ever heard of 4klang ? it´s a perfect candidate for the osc imho...
It´s a demoscene vsti for very very small music.

http://4klang.untergrund.net

As windows executable, the music is <2kb in size and often used in 4kb or 8kb intros:
(kind of small sized multimedia realtime presentation)

it´s very limited of course. But that´s a challenge for sure ;)

It's very impressive and reminds me of the farbrausch synth ( http://www.kvraudio.com/product/v2-by-farbrausch ), but now comes my disclaimer:

Since it's coded in l337 Windows ASM I doubt this synth is portable to any other os at all.

AND SINCE THERE IS NO OSX PORT, THIS SYNTH NEEDS TO BE EXCLUDED FROM OSC AND THE DEV HAS TO BE LAUNCHED INTO OUTER SPACE.

OSC NEEDS A NEW RULE: THE SYNTH HAS TO BE AVAILABLE FOR WIN AND OSX. THERE IS NO COMPROMISE ANYMORE. WINDOWS IS DEAD.

I say leave the rule as it is. "Mastering" is a misconstrued term most of the time anyway. I treat my master fader in reaper as my "mastering process" for these anyway. there you can do almost anything you need, from bus compression, to eq, to fades with automation... if you really want to master, do it there! we're not putting it on a record, (well I did, but I mastered all that together, after the fact!) so no need to "master".
