Keep in mind i'm on a budget. I may buy Emotional Piano some time, as it is one which I have been watching, but i think addictive keys will be good for now.Fleer wrote:Good choice. Add in the AK Upright too, for character. And now we're talking about character, have a look at CineSamples Piano in Blue, SoundIron Emotional Piano and OrangeTreeSamples Evolution Rosewood Grand.
Apart from those, many other Sampletekks are exquisite, particularly TVBO (including 7CG and TBO) and White Grand. Then there's ProductionVoices Grand Gold. Grand indeed.
Which virtual piano should I choose?

Just came across this, which looked interesting. http://www.supremepiano.com/product/megasteinway.htm Not sure if it fits into your budget, but it uses modeling and the samples sounded decent - an odd resonance here and there and I wasn't completely sold on the lows, but seemed pretty good to me.

Good pick. I'm also quite pleased with Addictive Keys. Good sound and highly customisable (as far as piano sound goes)

I like AK too, especially upright.
But it lacking multi layered samples, timbre is the same every velocity.
So trying to get a softer touch when key is soft touch I used the dynamic envelope filter, but it was not well documented. Even talking to XLN support they had no clue.
I got something half ok at some time, but still don't know how their interface is supposed to work. but it cuts a bit when soft and open up when hitting harder.
Maybe they updated their presets by now, don't know. Run external digital piano now.

You may want to take a look at Sound Magic Pianos, have different piano brands. Here are the links

Sampletekk has just launched a new Cinematic Grand called CIN-C, exquisite as always, and on sale.
In fact, they achieved an ideal mix between close mic and ambient mic settings, adding in some enhanced resonance. Superb grand piano. I particularly admire the way Sampletekk use their renowned piano libraries and render them into something uniquely musical (http://www.sampletekk.com/grand-pianos&product_id=235)

Almost as much as snare drum tone, pianos are very personal and it's very hard to say that one is better than the rest. Personally, Soniccouture's Hammersmith is my go-to piano. It's not insanely detailed, but to me, it has an exceptionally "real" sound, just like their (even better in my opinion) Fender Rhodes instrument EP73 Deconstructed. I think much of this is due to small imperfections that they deliberately left in the library. Hammersmith is also fairly cheap.
There are so many good ones now, I kind of wish somebody would do a rigorous, blind test to determine if anybody can tell the difference between sampled pianos and the real thing. Does anybody reading this know if anybody has ever done something like this? For academic reasons, I'm very interested.

NI will have their annual sale soon so you can get the Definitive piano collection for 99 which includes 3 pianos, one of the cheapest options with different flavours in a single package.

You should choose the one(s) you most connect to. I personally don't think there's such a thing as "too many" here.
I personally bought and dumped my XLN pianos, but sometimes find I miss the CP Electric Grand. The other three, I don't miss at all. I've stopped even having the Kontakt pianos installed as I find them too annoying in the lower velocities. However, I do keep The Giant and Una Corda installed for their mangling production abilities just in case. I also have Piano in Blue, but after Kontakt went version 6, never think about it since it never shows since then.
My most used now are Pianoteq 6PSB (daily) and Grand 3.
Very subjective, YMWVATT.
