I get the feeling that it is more about the music than about the instruments.
I think what we're talking about is similar to the "uncanny valley."

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_valley

The OB-X, and most analog synths, just never get close enough to the real thing to they live well outside the uncanny valley.

Frankly though, I have always hated synth brass sounds from any synth.

Never heard of that valley, but maybe that plays a role, who knows...

But frankly, I don't know many synth sounds that sound similar enough to real instruments. usually the dynamics are just missing, even good synths are just too primitive to produce all the subtle details of an electric bass, a brass instrument, a violin, a piano or whatever.

I do like brass pads, but in the background, not as a replacement for a horn section (EWF, Kool and the Gang, etc.). When used in that way synth horns tend to fall apart and sound like a rubber duck 8)

There are some cases where I am not sure myself, though. For instance the brass during the chorus of this old song. I think it is a synth, but there are also lots of real brass instruments, so I am not sure why they would use that rubber duck sound 8)

Uh... I'm pretty sure Prince does not belong in this thread, and definitally not in a post with Milli Vanilli in it, except if there were the words, "Not anything like" in it.
I had in mind mostly his Dirty Mind and Controversy albums (don't know all his works). Definitely cheap porn music, both in terms of synthwork and everything else. Read up:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Controver ... _reception

Or take a listen. I tried once. Big mistake. Prefer Milli Vanilli.

Sorry if this has already been posted but the porn music of the 80s has roots in the pop music of the 70s, which has roots in the porn music of the 70s etc.

Listen to this intro. If this isn't porn-like then I don't know what is:

The intro sounds a bit cheap, but I like the bass  There is an ugly, clap-like delay sound on the left channel, strange that they did not remove that, or even deliberately added it :P

Don't know about the clap but the songs is so 80's. Bass is nice. - Ok I have another little danish porn-tune with a porn electric slap bass up front. It's a song made for the national danish soccer team for the fifa World Cup 86. I like the tune also - it's has become standard to every championship in radio and among the audience :).
Edit: A distinct Orchestra Hit sound is also another characteristic of the track.
(Ignore the video headline. Doesn't make sense).

I only hear the ugly delay sound on my headphones, which of course are much better than my speakers.

The bass on that horrible Danish track was very popular in the 80's, DX7, right? I know it from good songs as well, so the problem is not the bass as such, but the way it is played and used. Like in that Danish track, which is just cheap and crappy musically speaking.

Yes probably the DX7. It could have been Korg M1 but I don't think that M1 was released before 1990 or something. By the way it's not crappy and cheap that track. I like it ;-). Just a good pop-song. Not a masterpiece but it works.

So slow bass is an element? Ive never watched 80s porn.

Hardly the worst Danish 80s kitch. Remember this one?

A half-assed and unsuccesful attempt to enter the international music market in 1986. No wonder it failed, it made a cliche of the 80s even before the decade was over.

Most times I didn't hear anything of the underlying music either. I was afraid my mother would hear the "noise" :hihi: And the noise I'm talking about is of course the horrible underlying music.
