I didn't see this posted anywhere else on here, and I don't know how many KVRers might benefit from this, but the "Basic" version of FORTE's notation software is free for a couple more weeks.

Other than tablature and drum notation, it may not do much more than your DAW already can do. But that misses the point of getting to download and install more software that you got for free (whether you needed it or not).

Here's what FORTE says about it (all typos and errors courtesy FORTE):
Why Download FORTE Basic Now?
Because FORTE Basic May Be Everything You Need…

Drum Notation. Tablature for guitar and bass. Easy input for notes, accents, chords, clefs and ornamentation. Metronome function to perfect your score timing. Seamless control for multi-function and single-function uses.
PLUS…
4 Staves. 2 Voices. 2 Lyric Versus Pro Stave. Optimized Soundfront. Save as Wave. Import Files...and so much more.

We celebrate 500.000 installs of FORTE. From Sept. 7 until September 14 FORTE we offer our Basic Version for FREE. Usually it is 24 $. No strings attached - Just enter your email and download your copy.

FORTE is a windows based software which helps you bring your musical ideas to life. Get FORTE Basic for FREE now!
All they ask for is an e-mail address. No Facebook "likes" or anything else terribly intrusive.

Thanks for the info anyhow, I'll keep this for a rainy day :tu:

That's cheating!

Cheating is fine in school and politics, but it has no place in somewhere important, like the KVR forums! :x

I DL'd it just in case I'll need it, but are there other free notation programs out there? If so, how do they compare to Forte Basic? Thanks!

There are, yes. But since this is a stripped-down version of an industry-leading package, you probably get more than you would with some of the others.

MuseScore (Windows, Mac, Linux): https://musescore.org/

Musink (Windows): http://musink.net/default.aspx

Crescendo (Windows, Mac, Android, Kindle): http://www.nch.com.au/notation/

Finale NotePad (Windows, Mac): https://store.makemusic.com/Downloads/Default.aspx

Notes: MuseScore rates the best of all the free apps, both by PC World and Keyboard Magazine. Finale hasn't been updated since 2012.

Keyboard Magazine did a round-up of notation software last year (or early this year). Check their website for more information. At the time, FORTE Basic wasn't free, and I don't think it was included in the comparison.
