I've found myself really disappointed when building patches, only to find out that they sound pretty good in a mix, and the mix tells me what the synth needs to sound like.
Learn more about synthesis but also write a melody and add some drums to see how it sounds.
Also, patches that sound awesome by themselves often don't work in a mix (in my experience) because they take up too much of the frequency spectrum, leaving little room for other instruments. However, if your work is much more focused on sound design, this could be a good thing.
