Algorithmic Composition in Bitwig?

Hello,

I am considering the purchase of Bitwig. My initial objective is to play with computer generated composition and utilize a modern DAW. I did search on this before posting but I am still not clear if Bitwig has the facility to do algorithmic composition.

For example, I input a key and time signature and have it generate a pattern\loop that can be further explored using Bitwigs DAW capabilities.

Can this be done with Bitwig? If so what is it called in the context of this product?

Thanks,

Tiberious

There are a few building blocks you can hook up to achieve this to a certain extent. You need to get creative though.
Vsts with midi out work too.

If you're willing to use external VSTs as well, check out Notomizor: http://sys.efope.de/

It lets you set a highest and lowest note plus a probability - so you could write a sequence and then let Notomizor know which amount of these notes you want to be randomized. Put Bitwig's Diatonic Transposer in its FX slot and you pretty much got what you want.

If you want a complety random sequence from scratch, just play on long note and put an arpeggiator in front of the Notomizor/Diatonic Transposer device. Maybe even an LFO MOD with S+H envelope to randomize the arpeggiator's velocity... 8)

Thanks for the posts!

In the good ole days of algo comp I could initiate patterns using parameters like: time sig, scale\key (dorian for example), octaves, consonant notes seed, dissonant note seed\, max notes, note types (who/half/quarter) etc. Just keep hitting re-gen until got one I liked. Also tweek it to parameters to better gen what I was looking for.

I was hoping such an option would be built into Bitwig. Sure seems powerful once you have a pattern\loop established.

That sounds as you should take a closer look at Numerology!

Numerology includes a VST plugin that can be run inside Bitwig.

Wow great suggestions all! Thanks!

How about an arpeggiator? Does Bitwig come with one otherwise could you recommend one?

BTW, I just order Bitwig! cant wait!

Now it is even more fun with Bitwig 1.2. Because you can use group clips with actions.

There was a nice preset using a randomized Arp today:

Yes, it does. It is very nice and if this doesn't suit your needs i'd check out Cthulhu by Xfer. ($39.00 USD) This one is my favorite.

This one is pretty cool too > Hypercyclic (Free)
