What's the best free standalone midi player? I Google'd it and not much comes up. Why can't VLC or Audacity or Quicktime or anything play midi? All I got were these 10 year old no-name programs.

Get Light Alloy or Foobar 2000 with MIDI plugin. Then search and download tgsf21x.sf2 (SoundFont) and configure either of the players to use it. Enjoy.

Midi is data. There is no audio in it. If you have Microsoft GM synth already installed in windows, you can use Media Player.

Synthesia also works great as a Midi player.

Windows Media Player can play midi files.
