'Movie Maker' appears to only support 192kbps audio. Is there something free, and as simple as movie maker, that supports higher quality sound? Apparently, the old 'windows movie maker' actually supports up to 440 kbps.
Ideally, the video editor would not mess with the imported .wav at all. Is that possible? so many questions...

Yes. There's an excellent free video editor out there called Hitfilm Express (www.hitfilm.com). It's not only editor but also a great compositing and visual fx tool (eg like Adobe AfterEffects). Express version is completely free and fully functional and covers perfectly all the needs for anyone looking for a free editor. It can also be expanded by adding feature packs costing 10-30$.

I'm not a musician, but I've designed sounds that others use to make music. http://soundcloud.com/obsidiananvil

HitFilm 3 Express has some great export options (you can export audio in 320 kbps and it will sound very good), as does DaVinci Resolve Free. You do get a bit more direct control over the audio (in the editor itself) with the latter, though.
I've reviewed these two, along with other good free video editing software here: http://bedroomproducersblog.com/2016/01 ... -software/

Man, I recently bought Sony Movie Studio. If I had seen that article it would have saved me so much time!! I wasn't even aware of Hitfilm Express! I think Hitfilm Express is the best kept secret of free software. I have been using it since V2 when the Express version was not free in general but they did a Facebook free giveaway for it. V2 had a bit more features included but the expansion packs for V3 are pretty good deal too. It definitely beats all the low end editors like Adobe Premiere Elements and the Sony Movie Studio.SampleScience wrote:Man, I recently bought Sony Movie Studio. I know, I've been using the free Movie Maker for a while and trying hard to incorporate Blender into my editing workflow. I was 100% sure that you can't a better video editor than those two for free. And then one day I saw a review of HitFilm 3 Express (the free version) on YouTube and couldn't believe my eyes. So good.SampleScience wrote:Man, I recently bought Sony Movie Studio. On Linux, the best that I found was Kdenlive (https://kdenlive.org/). I did my video with it. Everything else was too crashy or too limited.

Seems odd no one has mentioned their DAW: what I do is Cubase, which will <replace audio stream in video>, and I'm just stickin the 24-bit 44.1khz .wav in. I don't recall rendering any video to contain that sizable an audio file, but I imagine this tends to be faster.Xiangqi wrote: Ideally, the video editor would not mess with the imported .wav at all.
