Best way to open up this beat/instrumental? (eq vs multiband compression)

Got this instrumental i want to track some singing/rapping over. However it is super compressed.

Ive done some research and saw using a transient designer would help, but would like to know any other tips on restoring the dynamics as best as possible.

Obviously would do some eq. How much could multiband compression help in this situation?

Any other tips would be very helpful, thank you!
